Ethan Canin is a master of two jobs, both of which take special skills. First cuts, or other kinds of wounds. When he gets a day off from his work as a doctor, Ethan turns to his second job. He writes stories. Ethan’s first book of stories won a prize for the best book by a first-time author.

Do the jobs sometimes get in the way of each other? “Not at all,” Ethan says. “In fact, being a doctor helps my writing. I get to know all kinds of people. Besides, I can’t hole myself up in a cabin and write down ideas for the rest of my life. I also need to be able to help sick people.”
