〈題目〉A Standing Ovation

C： 聊王，你好像真的很會 chat。我們為你 clap the hands。

D： 謝謝你們的 praise, 還給我 applause。不過，要 applaud 我，也不一定要拍手，你們也可以 cheer 幾聲，或 stamp or stomp the feet，反正所有的喝采我都會 accept的。

E： 跺腳不太 graceful，站起來 cheer 幾聲倒是 a good idea。

F： 聽說站起來不斷地 clap the hands，也就是所謂的 standing ovation，才是最大的 applause，不是嗎？

D： 不是，所謂 “a standing ovation” 並一定要 stand up，只要給予一陣熱烈 enthusiastic 的拍手或歡呼，便是 “an ovation” 了。

C： 不對吧， “standing” 不是「站著」嗎？ 電視上「魔法ABC」的魔女好像也說過「就是因為站著，才叫 standing ovation」。

D： Really？她真的也這麼說嗎？她的 Program 很好，她講的 English 也很好，只是it's a pity，她顯然偶爾也會 “nod”？

E： 會怎樣？會「拿的」？會 take a bribe？會索賄！

D： No，「即使荷馬有時也會 nod」的 “nod”，懂嗎？

E： 不懂。河馬會 take 嗎？河馬有什麼 bribe 可以拿？

D： 「即使 Homer 也會打盹」沒 hear 過嗎？

E： 沒有。Hippo 在水裡會打什麼拿 what？只會 hide and seek 罷了。

D： My goodness! 原來你在說 hippopotamus，在說 river 或 stream 或 brook 裡的河馬。聽清楚，我說的是 ancient Greece 的大詩人 Homer，我說即使 Homer 有時也會打盹 nod，因此造成差錯 lapses 或 errors。

C： 原來 it is so，荷馬會打盹，仙人 beat the drum 也有時錯，大家 horse horse tiger tiger，我們也不要太 blame 那位魔女了。

D： 我也不想 blame anybody。 只是就 facts 論 facts， “a standing ovation” 的 “standing” 的確跟「站立」沒有 relation，坐著的人一樣可以給人家一陣“standing ovation”。

E： 那麼， “standing” 是什麼 meaning 什麼 sense？

D： 在字典裡 look it up 吧。 Any dictionary 會告訴你：standing 就是 duration，就是持續服務、持續存在、或持續保有的 length，所以我們會有 long standing 的紀錄，或 long standing 的習慣。 所謂「痼疾」就是 “a disease of long standing”，而我跟 Professor Tseng 是 “friends of more than ten years' standing”，是超過十年持續交往的 old friends，不是嗎？

E： You are right. 你們兩位都 worth 我們給予 “standing ovation” 的。

D： 還是 “nod”，應該說 “a standing ovation”，一陣持續的喝采。 “ovation”可以一陣一陣地數，所以要有 “a”。

F： 那麼，我們也該說 “an applause” 囉？

D： No, “applause” 不可數，你們給我 applause 就好，不要 “an applause” 或 “two applauses”。

C： 怪了，同樣是拍手叫好， “ovation” 是 countable， “applause” 卻 uncountable，洋人真是 nuts，真是不值得為他們 clap the hands。

D： Language`本來就是一種 habit，語法本來就只是 convention，是一種成規，常常沒有 reason 的。像 rice 和 bean 兩樣東西，都是一粒一粒的 grain, 可是「吃米」是 eat rice. 「吃豆」卻是 eat beans. 又像「拍手」，你可以說 “clap the hands”，也可以說 “give 某人 a big hand” 表示「大大的拍手」。

C： 這麼說，我們真的要 give you a big hand 了。謝謝您的 instruction!
