〈題目〉 Cuckoo Flowers

B： 聊王，聽說您也是 TD 的 graduate。

D： 不是大學部 undergraduate，是研究所 postgraduate 畢業的。

A： 那您會不會覺得很 proud？

D： 有什麼好 proud 的？對 some people 而言，「台大」是神經 nerves「太大」條的implication。

B： 有 proof 或 evidence 為証嗎？

A： Yes, 我那時候, let me see, 應該是 1972 到 1973 或 74之間吧。TD的 undergraduates 出了一本散文集，entitled《杜鵑花城的故事》。

A： 不用說了，一定是 at night 的時候，queer 得很，杜鵑花竟然會 talk，而且一大堆playboys 和 playgirls 竟然 flying across 杜鵑窩，把花的 perfume 或 fragrance 飄滿了整個 TD 城。

D： 你想到 where 了？ 那本書裡的 stories，我早就 forgot 掉了。

B： 那麼您還 remember 什麼？

D： 我現在還能 recall 的，就是那本書還附了一個英文的 title，叫The Tales of the City of Cuckoo Flowers 或 something like that。

A： 好多 the，又好多 of 喔!

B： 好 long，又好難 read 喔!

D： In fact，最大的 mistake 在於把「杜鵑花」譯成 cuckoo flowers。

A： Is it 錯了嗎？

D： 大錯特 wrong。 杜鵑花應該是 azalea，不是 cuckoo 加上 flowers。 “Cuckooflower” 是有這個 word，但它不是杜鵑花，而是酢漿草。

B： Are you sure？ 花變草？ 杜鵑變豆漿？ 那翻譯是 on purpose 的嗎？

A： 那您當時有沒有 crack 他們的腦袋？有沒有裂開他們的 craniums 或 crania，叫他們不如歸去，或讓他們花容失 color 而且 lose face？

D： No, 我只是 thought of 《飛越杜鵑窩》Flying over the Cuckoo Nest  那片 film。

A： 那 movie 怎樣？

B： 是不是大家都 nuts 或 crazy 到 the extreme？

D：  You get it.  其實，所謂「杜鵑窩」就是 a madhouse，說好聽一點就是 an asylum 一個裡頭都是狂人瘋子在 nest，在窩藏，也在 rest, 在被 taken care of, 在—

B： 為什麼瘋人院叫 cuckoo nest 呢？

D： 我也不太 understand 。 不過，俚語 slang 裡頭，一直把 “cuckoo” 當形容詞，而它的 meaning 就是 “crazy, foolish, silly”。至於 “nest” ，它不僅指鳥獸的巢窟，也指 crime 的淵藪。

A : 怪了，cuckoo 被 connected with 瘋狂， crazy 被 associated with 杜鵑？

D : 聽說杜鵑通常自己不會 weave nests，只會把自己的蛋  lay 在別種鳥的 nests 裡，然後叫別種鳥替它 hatch 小鳥。

A： Really？這樣的 cuckoo 未免太過 irresponsible了。

B： 如果 that is true，那可真是 crazy 了。

D： 不過，西洋人一提到 cuckoo，不只會想到 cranium 壞掉而已，他們還會 associate it with 「當烏龜」or「戴綠帽」。

A： 當 turtle 還 wear green hats?

B： 顯然 craniums 或 crania 一樣壞掉了。

D：  不是 craniums 或 crania 的關係，而是 cuckoo 這個字跟 cuckold 這個字很near。 Cuckold 就是「當烏龜戴綠帽」的 husband。

A： Westerners 也常當 cuckolds 嗎？

D： 他們當烏龜時，聽說頭上就會 grow horns。

A： Turtles 或 tortoises 還長角？ 以後，怎麼 wear green hats 呢？

B： 難道 horns不會刺破 hats 嗎？

D： 長角以後就等於 wear the horns了， 而 wear the horns 就是太太跟人家那樣了。

A： 這麼說來，Westerners 為什麼喜歡在家裡放個 cuckoo clock 呢？難道  fond of 每小時聽一遍那 Cuckoo! Cuckoo! 的叫聲，然後想到 cuckold ，然後被 horrified 一下嗎？

D： Maybe 布榖鐘只是要 warn 他們： 屋後那枝 red apricot 快要出 wall 了！

B： 是嗎？只是 red apricot 嗎？太 nerves-straining 了! 還是 our 布榖鳥比較 better，我們的會布施榖物，會 give crops as alms，會給 farmers 或 peasants 帶來 what they want。

D： 才沒那麼 good 呢。我們的 cuckoo 只是懷鄉懷舊 nostalgia 的象徵，「啼鵑」the crying cuckoo 只會「喚起東都夢」，叫人 dream of the East Capital, 所以杜宇只會 exclaimed:「不如歸去」 Why not go back?，所以—

A： 所以我們還是不談 cuckoo 或 cuckooflowers 好了。

D： 那麼 talk about 什麼呢？ azalea 嗎？

B： 談 the city of azaleas，談淡淡的 March，chat on 杜鵑花城，談 TD，談—

D： Stop! 那個地方雖然不是 cuckoo nest, 可是裡頭還是有 quite a few 比孔丘還狂的 mad dogs. 那些自以為 right 的傢伙，都是 nuts，都是 crazy guys，都是 craniums 壞了，都是神經線 Too Da 條，都是 What is there to chat on or talk about？！
