〈題目〉 I like it best, and love it most.

Ａ： 聊王，您好像經常 give heed to 電視上的英文。

Ｄ： 我到處都 pay attention，只是電視上的名人 celebrity，如果 speak English，我就特別會 heed 他的話。

Ａ： 最近注意到 anything 嗎？

Ｄ： 最近沒有， a long time ago 倒有一件事。

Ａ： 那麼， I'm all ears.

Ｄ： 你知道吧， 歌星影星，幾乎 all stars 永遠都是愛人與被愛的 darlings。他們 all day long 以及 all night long 都在「愛﹑愛﹑愛﹑愛不完」。

Ａ： 我知道，so what?

Ｄ： 有一次，有一位 actress, 說了一句 “I like it most” 的話。

Ｂ： 那有什麼 matter 呢？ 是 “it” 不清楚嗎？ 有 sexual implication 嗎？

Ｄ： 那 “it” 很 clear。 那是指她 put on 在肩上的那件 cape。

Ｂ： 那麼 the problem出在哪裡? 那披肩是 fur 製的嗎？

A  :  那皮草一定是 made of sable 或 raccoon 的 fur。

Ｄ： No, it has nothing to do with 黑貂或浣熊的 fur。 The problem 出在她應該說 “I like it best”， 不要說 “I like it most”。

Ｂ： Why? 中文不是說「最喜歡」嗎?「最」不是 “most” 嗎?

Ｄ： 「最」是 “most”， 「我最愛她」是 “I love her most”。 可是，「我最喜歡她」就應該說成 “I like her best”。

B :  Again why? 「喜歡」跟「愛」不一樣嗎?  “like” and “love”是 different 嗎?

D :  對那些 darling stars 而言，maybe 兩者常常 make no difference。 不過，英文的 habit 就是那樣。 “like”要跟 “better, best”一起用， 而“love”則跟 “more, most”用在一起。 所以你一定要說 “I like him better, but I like her best.”或 “I love him more, but I love her most”。

A :  Hey, 這真 interesting 也。 字與字的 relationship 好像比人與人的 relationship 更恆常，更 constant, 更不能隨便呢。 Movie stars 可以隨時想跟誰就  follow 誰。 字卻似乎永遠 go with 特定的字。

B :  我並不太 believe 字與字會 that constant, 雖然它們之間 certainly 不會動不動就 quarrel。 

A :  說的也是。它們之間偶爾是會有點 ambiguous, 有點曖昧。不過，它們不會 like men and women 一般，讓人無法真正 realize 它們的 sense and sensibility，或  sense and situation。

B :  Right, 它們的知性與感性， or 意義與場合，都是 often clearer than 男男女女的 behavior 或 conduct。

A :  Certainly, 當那些 darling stars 明白地說“I like you most”或“I love you best”時，你就要特剔 careful。 他們 imply 的 meaning 可能就是 “I like you a little at most” 或 “I like you a little at best”。

D :  你們真會 crack jokes。 回到 my point 吧。我說那女星把 “like best”說成 “like most”。

B :  把 love and like 以及 best and most 混在一起，人家就無法 catch it 嗎？

D :  還是會 understand, 只是聽起來不順，就像你 hear 一個愛家顧家的女人跑去 follow 一個愛花亂花的 dirty boy 一樣，總覺得有點 queer。

B :  What? 有點「虧」啊! 虧在 where?

D :  不是「虧」，是 queer， 是「怪怪的」。 我問你們：「好」的意思是不是等於「佳」?  而“good”是不是等於 “fine”或 “nice”?

A :  應該是吧，它們是 synonyms, 同義字。

D :  那麼，你們 eat「好餚」嗎?  eat「佳菜」嗎?

B :  No, 我們 eat「好菜」或「佳餚」。

D :  那就對了。說話是一種 habit， 習慣了才 natural， 不習慣的話，說出來一定queer。 知道嗎? 聖誕節時，洋人會 enjoy good cheer, 而“good cheer”就是「好菜」或「佳餚」。 你不能說他們在 enjoy fine cheer 或  nice cheer, 那樣就有點queer了。

A :  我懂了。我可以說 “I like good cheer best”或 “I love good cheer most”。

D :  You can do that. 不過，我自己倒 like 女明星 better than anything.

B :  Really? 是那位說錯 most and best 的 star 嗎？ Who is 她呀?

D :  我已經 forgot。 我只記得她有時候 nervous 緊張得很，不過她很愛她的 home，好像 as yet 至今，她還沒有 divorced, 還沒離過婚。

A :  可能是還沒有 married, 還沒結婚過吧! 

B :  Anyway, 您這種 gossip, 我們都會 love it more and more 的。

D :  我也會 like you better and better。
