〈題目〉Trust me. You can make it.

B : Hi, 聊王，謝謝你的 invitation。 到這裡來開 talk, 有什麼 special rules 或 regulations嗎？

D : 有，but only one， 那就是：你聊的 every sentence 都必須要有 English, 不能光是 Chinese.  Is that clear?

C : Yes, loud and clear.  但每次 chat 都要被 limited to 一個 topic 嗎？

D : 話題實際上是 unlimited, 每次我們都讓它 drift naturally to 一個 topic, 然後我們就會 naturally concentrate on 一件事。

A : Each time 都由 fixed 的一個人來 open the talk 嗎？

D : 也不 fixed.  任何人都可 initiate the chat.

B : 今天就是我 began 的。

C : 那 today 有沒有 any particular topic 要 concentrate on?

D : Actually no, 但我先問你們一個 question. 你們 ever heard “Trust me. You can make it” 這句話嗎？

A : 有， on television.  以前 for a long while, 常常 heard.

D : Remember 誰說的嗎？ 有 given heed to it 嗎？

A : 我從來不會 give any heed to 電視上的 ad.  反正那是 ad.  那好像是 for losing weight 的， right?

D : You are right. 知道什麼 meaning 嗎？

A : 不太 understand.  Is it 「相信我，你能製造 something」？

D : Make 某東西？  No, “it” 會指 any particular product 嗎？

C : Possible.  或許是瘦身 oil 或什麼 「累死劈」。

A : Very probably so.  他們 make 的 ointment, 不管有沒有 pollutant, 都會 sell.  至於「累死劈」嘛—

B : 任何 recipe 不管有沒有 any side effect, 也一樣會 sell. 

D : Sell 你們的頭啦！ 那些油、膏、配方， 要是真的會 work, 還需要 put forth 廣告嗎？

B : 會啦， ad 只是用來 increase 收入而已啦。

D : Anyway, 今天我要說的是： “You can make it” 的 meaning 就是 「你會成功的」。  但你要不要 trust 廣告的 spokesperson, 那就 up to you 囉。

C : 真的嗎？ 那是 “You can succeed” 的 sense 嗎？

B : 不！不！ 我在「魔法 ABC」的 program中，聽那魔女 said: “You can make it” 是 wrong 的英文，她說那句話  should change to 正確的 “You can do it.”

C : 我也 heard so.  她好像 explained 說： 做事是 “do it,” 不是 “make it.”

D : 這是什麼 magic 的說法呀！  Did she really 這麼說？

B : 不信的話，你去 play 錄下那節目的 VCD or DVD.  去 watch 看看。你可以 trust 我，我可以 trust her.

D : Trust 你的頭啦！ 我沒有 time 去 play a fool.  反正 “You can make it” 就是那個 meaning 那個 sense.  只是她說的 “You can do it” 也對。

A : 都是 the same?

D : 不！ Meaning 不一樣，使用的 occasion 也 different.

A :  Really? 請說 clear 一點。

D : 好， “to make it” 是個 idiom, 是口語 colloquial 常說的話。不信，你去 consult 字典。字典會說它的 meaning 是 “to do or achieve a certain thing.”

A : 那麼， ad 是在什麼 case 或 occasion 說那句 slogan?

D : 那代言人是要我們 trust 她的話，她說你會 make it, 就是說參與 losing weight project 的人一定會辦得到，會在某個 time period 內達成 lose 多少 kilo 的目標，那就是她所謂的「成功」。而 “make” 就是「到達」， “it” 就是暗指那 goal, 那目標。

A. :  Really?  “Make” 有「到達」的 meaning 嗎？

D : 不信，再去 consult 字典。字典會說 “make” 的另一個 sense 就是 arrive at 或 reach, 如 “The ship made port,” 船到達港口。

B : 我們 trust 你，你的 explanation 很 reasonable. 

C : 可是，那跟說 “You can do it” 有何 difference?

D : “You can do it” 是 “You are able to do it.”  也就是「你有能力去做它」，例如：你有 money 所以能，你有 time 所以能，你 starve 幾天不會 die, 你 exercise 很久不會累到發生 heart attack 等等，所以能。

B : 原來 that's the difference.

C : Maybe 那魔女真的自己 said something wrong. 

D : 那個 lapse 只是個小瑕疵，可能是一時的 slip of the tongue 而已。

A. :  那你對那個 ad 有何 comment?

D : That's O.K, 很 successful.  如果參與 project 的人，接受了 recipe 之後， 真的只有「累死劈」而已，如果沒有人真的會 make it, 那麼 put forth 那個廣告的人就不會 make money, 也就再也不能叫人 “Trust me” 了。

B :  All too true!  那你現在還有 anything to say 嗎？

D : 我只 hope 我自己的 program 能夠收到 expected 的效果。

C : Trust 我們!  You can make it!

D : 我也希望沒有人會 object to 我們這種「part 中文 part 英文」的 chat.

A :  Trust me!  We can do it!
