《Farther Along 》：

          The lyrics to the song “Farther Along” were written by Rev. W. A. Fletcher, an itinerantpreacher while traveling on a train to the Indian Territories near the end of 1911. He wasfeeling a bit sad because his wife was expecting their first-born child in a few weeks andhe wouldn’t be there for the occasion. He felt that his priorities were to his obligationswith his ministry in the Indian Territories and wrote the lyrics to reflect his frame ofmind at the time. Sitting next to him was J. R. Baxter, a gospel music promoter who was quite taken with thelyrics that the Rev. Fletcher was writing and offered him $2.00 for them. Mr. Baxter thenhad them put to music and the song has been quite popular in the gospel music arena ever since. Contributed by James Greer  (Grandson of Rev. W. A. Fletcher)

         Jesse Randall Baxter, Jr . (December 8, 1887 ～ January 29, 1960), known professionally as J.R. Baxter and  sometimes referred to as "Pap", was an American Southern Gospel composer and publisher.

說明： 

        這首歌的歌詞，是 華盛頓州的 弗萊徹 (W. A. Fletcher ) 牧師 於西元1911年 寫的，當時 他 必須 前往 印第安人 保留地，巡迴佈道，《印地安納為「印地安人的土地」(land of the Indians)之意。它於1816年加入聯邦，成為美國第19州。》而 由於 他的妻子懷孕 ，即將 臨盆，希望 屆時 他能在身旁 ，一起迎接 這個新生命的到來，但 弗萊徹 認為 傳教工作 還是 應該 列為優先，故仍 毅然前往。此時的他，正搭 火車要前往 印第安人保留地， 心情 還是 有些沮喪，在 此心境之下，寫了 這首歌詞。很湊巧， 在火車上 其鄰座是  一位福音音樂的推廣者J. R. Baxter，很欣賞 這些富有詩意的字句，出了 美金2元 將之買下。後來 再將 這歌詞 譜上曲，即是 這首《Farther Along》歌曲。 

       《Farther Along》是 一首 美國 鄉村民謠音樂。也是 教會的讚美詩歌 (Christian Music)。歌名 的意思 是 循著耶穌基督的足跡 向前行。

         鄉村民謠音樂 ，一直是 美國最受歡迎、也  最能代表 美國文化之一的音樂風格。鄉村民謠音樂 主要抒寫 鄉村生活方式、地區的事蹟與驕傲、以及耶穌基督的信仰。鄉村音樂中 最常唱到的主題 是：愛情、家庭、信仰精神寄託，音樂中所流露出的是鄉村人民的純樸感情，他們對於自身所發生的事， 都將其寫入音樂，而 神 更是他們 會特別用鄉村樂曲 來頌楊的主題之一， 也 因著 過去鄉村人民生活的清苦，所以 人們 更把自己內心的聲音 藉由 鄉村民謠 化成 向 神 的祈求。

        耶穌基督的恩典 就是 他們所倚靠的一切，訴說著 生活所盼望的。許多歌手錄製的福音 音樂專輯 不只是 精采 也是 一個例證，每一首詩歌 都是 心中 對 神極大的感恩與敬拜，透過與鄉村音樂 融合的福音詩歌，更 顯出了 質樸而又專一 愛 神的特質，這樣的音樂 更 值得 讓人欣賞。

        這首歌曲 是 行公義與敗壞信仰的人， 他們之間的對比。世風日下，有人做盡壞事，卻仍舊 逍遙自在，而 有人戰戰兢兢 。守著 主吩咐的誡命，卻有時 還 被別人攻擊。這樣看來，做一個基督徒 似乎很苦，但是 這些 敬畏神的人 ，死後 進入天國 ， 真正享受 永恆的榮耀。因為 我們 遇到患難時 能生忍耐，忍耐生老練，老練生盼望，神應許的恩典 絕不落空  (聖經  羅馬書 5 : 3~5)。

此曲 歷來 翻唱者，  有 讚美詩歌 、鄉村民謠、浪漫抒情等 曲風，歌詞 亦 略有不同。其中 貓王 Elvis Presley 西元1967年的演唱 ，則為 慢版的抒情風，廣受喜愛。
