老歌亂談(753)I Am a Rock
Paul Simon和Art Garfunkal這兩位同齡的同學，在高中時就已組團。1957，未滿16歲的他們以「Tom & Jerry」的團名，發行了幾首歌曲，其中《Hey Schoolgirl》還入榜告示牌得到了第49名。後受到名製作人Tom Wilson的賞識和協助，簽進了Columbia唱片公司。1964，倆人發行了首張專輯《Wednesday Morning，3A.M.》，可惜成績不理想。眼看前景黯淡，倆人因而分手各謀出路，Paul Simon則飛去了英國尋求發展。

此首《I Am a Rock》原本是Paul Simon要寫給也是二重唱的團體Chad & Jeremy，但被打了回票，無奈之下就乾脆自己來唱，並收錄在他1965的個人專輯《The Paul Simon Songbook》中。此時，原製作人Tom Wilson可能因之前專輯的失敗，在懊惱之下忽然「靈光乍現」，將專輯中的《The Sound of Silence》以疊錄重製的方式，配上電吉他的伴奏，結果此新曲風大受歡迎，一舉衝上了告示牌的冠軍寶座。在此「起死回生」的情況下，Simon 和 Garfunkal當然是興奮不已，並趕緊再合體重回錄音室錄製歌曲，其中也包含了此首原為Paul Simon獨唱的《I Am a Rock》。
此曲的二重唱版在1966發行，成績相當耀眼，在告示牌熱門榜達到了第3名。Paul Simon從未以「搖滾」歌手自詡，此曲中的Rock只是單純的指一般「冷冰冰」、「無感情」的石塊，歌曲的男主角應該是曾經受過感情或友誼的創傷，而決定將自己封閉起來。照他的想法，沒有接觸就不會受到傷害，也不會因而哭泣 ( 提醒自己不再犯同樣的錯是應該的，但「因噎廢食」就值得商榷了^^。 )。
Paul Simon未料到的是，在21世紀的今天，只要有一條網路線 ( 歌曲中的主角則是靠書和詩集 )，許多人就可窩在家中不出來，都成了他所形容的Rock和Island了。
