老歌亂談(359)Billy Don't be a Hero
這首1974年的《Billy Don't be a Hero》，在歌詞中，以士兵身著藍色軍服，看似是以美國南北內戰作為歌曲背景，但當時美國仍陷於越戰且已疲累不堪 ( 越戰於1975年結束 )，故此曲也成為了著名的反戰歌曲。
歌曲敘述一位男子Billy要隨軍出征，他的未婚妻流著淚叮嚀他：要他不要逞英雄，不要拿自己的性命開玩笑，要保持將頭伏低，要回來娶她作為妻子。當戰事激烈陷入苦戰，士官長要大家堅持死守，並徵求志願者突圍去討援軍，Billy毫不猶豫的舉手，將未婚妻之前叮嚀的話語完全拋諸腦後。最後是未婚妻收到了一封Billy陣亡的通知信，說Billy曾是位英雄，應該為他感到驕傲。而諷刺的是→未婚妻將信柔成一團給丟了。
此曲是由英國樂團Paper Lace於1974率先發行，並獲得英國排行榜的冠軍。原以為在美國市場亦大有可為，沒想到才沒幾個月，美國樂團Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods亦推出其版本，不僅奪得了告示牌排行榜的冠軍，唱片的銷售量也超過了350萬張。原唱Paper Lace只得到美國排行榜的第96名。

And as he started to go,
She said Billy keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me.
I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away......
