這首歌是出自於搖滾歌劇Jesus Christ Superstar ( 又譯：萬世巨星 )，由劇中人物Mary Magdalene所唱的一首深情款款的情歌。整齣歌劇講的是耶穌受難前一週的事，而卻是由門徒猶大的觀點作為全劇的主軸。1973被改編為電影，以現代搖滾音樂劇的手法來呈現，引發了不少的爭論，據說不太適合虔誠的信徒觀賞。

Mary Magdalene是耶穌的追隨者，在新約中被描述為除了耶穌母親外的第二號重要的女人，也有一說她是耶穌的妻子。在歌劇中飾演Mary Magdalene的是美國女歌手Yvonne Elliman，她演唱的這首《I Don't Know How To Love Him》是她的第一首熱門單曲，1971獲得熱門排行榜的第28名。但當時又被嫁給美國人的澳洲籍女歌手Helen Reddy翻唱，倆人竟同時入榜，而Helen Reddy的名次卻超前為13名。Helen Reddy也因此首歌成功的踏上了她的歌唱之路，而在日後成為第一位獲得葛萊美獎的澳洲人。

此歌翻唱者眾，以下貼的是英國女歌手Sarah Brightman ( 莎拉布萊曼 )1992 的版本。
