As the sole representative of the affordable drop top motoring in the past 15 years, Mazda Miata has a very strong following. It is also the best selling sports car in Guinness Book of Records. Can this brand new 2006 Miata continue with its strong tradition?
This is the first total redesign of the Miata since its 1990 introduction. The new version is longer, wider, and more powerful. The bigger interior room is to accommodate the super-sized modern people; the new stronger motor is to compete with the first serious competitor since Miata’s first introduction in 1990, the Pontiac Solstice. The overall effective is still a tight, nimble, fun roadster.
The marginal increase in size also caused a small increase in weight. Fortunately the overall weight is still under 2500 lbs. It is still the lovable, tossable, fun loving Miata we adore. Powering the new Miata is a 170 hp 2-liter engine. It is not as fast or ferocious as the previous Mazdaspeed version, but the linear output and rev-happy engine enhanced the overall roadster experience. The new drop top is much easier to operate; one can easily raise or drop the top without leaving the driver’s seat.
The new Miata is as fun to drive as ever. The pure sports car ergonomics and no-nonsense interior are all proves of the designer’s dedication. One can easily throttle steer through twisty curves with its well balanced chassis and suspension set up. No wonder the Miata is still racers’ favorite tool to hone in their skills.
