〈題目〉The Little Ham

N :  Hello, 聊王， today 我有個 problem 想 ask you.

D :  No problem. 你可以 ask me any question, 也可以 raise any problem 或 put up any

       problem to me. 我會 try my best 來 answer 你的 question 或 solve 你的 problem.

M :  我也有一個 specific 的 problem 想請你 reply.

D :  你如果 ask me, 我就會 reply 或 answer.  你如果沒有 ask 或  inquire, 如果只是 raise a problem, 我會 think about it, 然後  see if, 看看是否， I can solve it.

N :  我先 inquire 好了，我的 problem 更 specific.

D :  Go ahead. 不過，你 ask 就好， ask your question 就好，不必  inquire about it. 

     “Inquire” 是「詢問」，你是可以詢問 about any problem, 但詢問的方法就是 ask a question.

M :  他的 problem 或 question 不見得， is not necessarily, 比我的更 specific.

D :  我想你們的 problem 也好， question 也好，應該都是特殊的，不是 general

       的。 如果專屬某種某類的，就是 specific; 如果個別存在，不屬整體的，就

       是 particular; 如果特殊到很離奇，就是 peculiar.

N :  那我的不算 peculiar, 我的 question 是： 哈姆雷特， Hamlet, 這個 name 跟他的性

       格有沒有 relation?

D :  跟他的 character 或 personality? 這個問題嘛 Hem! Hem! 這個問題---這個 question

       --- 這個 Hem! --- 這個 specific problem --- 這個 particular question --- hem!

M :  他的問題真 peculiar, 所以你一直 hum, 一直 hum 個不停。

D :  我在 hem, 是想不出， cannot think out, 一個 reasonable 的 answer 。As you know,

       我又沒 good at 或 versed in namesmanship. 你真的 interested in 命名學嗎？

N :  聽說你是 an expert 或 a specialist on 莎士比亞，所以我才 raise 或 put up 這

       個 problem.

D :  我對 Shakespeare 是有一點 expertise, 但我的 specialty 並不在於 naming in

       Shakespeare. 所以 hem!

M :  請聊王不必 hum了，先聽我的 question, Okay?

D :  對那個又 particular 又 specific 又 peculiar 的 question 或 problem, 雖然我沒有

       expertise, 我也可以 bring forth 一個 peculiar 的見解。

N :  Very good.  趕快 state it.  We are all ears.

D :  英文有小寫的 “hamlet”, 它的意思就是「小村落」， “a small village”.  這

       個 “hamlet” 由 “ham” 和 “-let” 組成， “ham” 就是 “home”, “-let” 是

       個 diminutive, 是個表示「小」的接尾詞，像 “booklet” 就是「小書、小冊子」

       一樣。

M :  慢點， slow up! 你說 “ham” 就是 “home”, 這可能嗎？ Is it possible? “Ham”

       明明就是「火腿」，怎麼會 turn into 家庭，然後又 turn into 村落呢？你可真

       是 magician 啊！

D :  我不是 magician, 我是 etymologist, 是字源學家。 According to etymology,

      “hamlet” 的確是源自 “little home” 的意思，小村不是 made up of 小家庭嗎？

N :  A small village 也可以 composed of large families 才對吧。 Anyway, 別扯上字源好

       嗎？ My interest 在於那個 name 跟那個人的 personality 有何  connection?

D :  當然有。 Hamlet 雖然經常 hesitate, 經常猶豫不決，可是他很有 home instinct.

M :  像鴿子一樣，無論出門多麼 far, 也 know how to come back home?

D :  像 doves 一樣，他非常 loves 他的家。

M :  他有成家嗎？有 wed 任何 woman 或任何 wanton 嗎？

D :  他沒有 married, 可是他也有 home, 只是那個 home 令他 sick.

N :  We know. 最後他還 went mad.

D :  他並非真的 mad, 他是 mad with method, 是瘋而有方。他不是裝瘋去找 wanton

       women, 而是裝瘋替父 avenge.

N :  想 avenge his father on the murderer, 結果他和謀殺者都 got killed. 我的 question 就

       是：他這種 fate, 跟他的 name 有關嗎？

D :  Of course. 他就是太愛 the little home, 太愛他們的家庭聲望 their family prestige, 才

       會 did such and such.

M :  依我看來， Hamlet 是有 “ham” 的情結，而那「哈姆」情結，或 “ham

        complex”, 就是「自己想吃腿，卻不准人劈腿」。

D :  你真 funny! 比我還 fantastic! 把你的 view 好好 explicate 一下好嗎?

M :  O.K. 沒問題。 “ham” 就是「火腿」，「火腿」就是「火熱的腿」，就是 the

        hot part between 腰 the loin, 以及膝 the knee. 它是 the thigh and the buttock 合起來

        的 part, 包括大腿 and 屁股。那是 a woman 最 attractive 的地方，也是 a wanton

        最 active 的地方。當一個 wanton man 碰上一個 wanton woman 時，兩個人的 hot

        parts 就會 take part in 一個又 hot 又 happy 的 activity.

N :  Hey, 你不要太 sexy 好嗎？

D :  可以稍為 sexy, 但請不要太 erotic, 有點「性感」非常自然，太過「色情」就不受

       歡迎。

M :  管他 sexy 或 erotic. 反正我們的「小哈姆」遇見了 Ophelia, 偶飛離兒。 Our little

        Ham 看到她的 nice ham, 認為自己這個 ham 的 butt 和她那個 ham 的 butt 可

        以 lock 在一起，只要 these two hams 或  two buttocks 能夠 lock together, 兩人就

       會 happy forever.

N :  Hey, 你已經太  sexual 了！

D :  是很 sensual, 不過 very usual.  快， go ahead!

M :  問題是： the wanton boy 很希望「小偶」也是  a wanton girl. 但她卻只是臉色

       很 wan 很蒼白而已, 她衣服上的 buttons 好像永遠不願  unbutton, 而說話老

       是 “but, but” 一大堆，結果她那 nice “butt” 永遠被那些 buts 給 buttress 住，

       被支撐得讓她的身子無法 lie down.

N :  結果呢？

D :  And the result?

M :  結果小哈姆 became insane, 忽然間 went mad.

D :  只因為人家不 wanton, 他就 went mad?

M :  On one hand, 因為小偶不 wanton;  on the other hand, 因為他的母親很 wanton。你

       想想看：小 ham 不 wanton, 老 ham 倒 wanton, 那不是沒有天理，沒有 what do you

        call it?

D :  我稱它為 home instinct.

M :  好吧， call it so.  反正小哈因為哈不到小偶，又 sick of 媽媽去哈他的 uncle, 所以

       每次想到人家在「哈屁」，他暗中就  imagine 自己和小偶也在「哈比」。比 this

       比 that，比那些 buts and butts, 比兩人的 hesitations 或猶豫，以及比那些憂愁歡

       樂， gloom or glee.

N :  結果呢？

D :  And the result?

M :  The result 就是他得了「哈姆情結」。 精神分析學家說： “That's a case of the

       Oedipus Complex”，說他有「戀母情結」。

N :  不是嗎？他 love 母親 too much, 才會 hate her so much.

M :  不，實際上他「哈」的是另一個「哈姆」，不是那個「母」。他 hams for小

       偶， hams 到最後，把 hammer 當 nail, 把榔頭當釘子，把 hammock 當 slipper, 把

       吊床當拖鞋，整個人都 hams down, 結果臉變 lean, 身變 thin, 眼不 keen, 只喝 gin,

       最後連 hamstring 也鬆了，腿筋無力只好 lie down. 可是 lie down 之後不是要跟小

       偶 ham to ham 或 ham with ham, 而是要 pass away, 要 die 那可恨的 death.

N :  悲劇啊， really tragic!

D :  喜劇 啊，多麼 comic! 多麼 fantastic!

M :  Humor 罷了， black humor,  好玩的 humor!
