Some people cannot face their own past, they cannot understand or realize who he is and what life is all about. They choose to blind their heart, not choose to face the truth and try to understand it.
The collector of a young American Jew, who collect maps, Marlboro cigarettes, and a fanny pack filled with Ziploc bags, and start his journey to Ukraine in search of Augustine, the woman who saved his grandfather’s life during the Nazi liquidation of Trachimbrod, his family shtetl. Armed with many copies of an old photograph of Augustine and his grandfather. Through his journey in Ukraine he discovered the whole story which his grandfather escaped to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis.
Also, the Alex’s “blind” grandfather’s story of his secret past. Alex’s grandfather’s sunglasses symbolized that the grandfather could not see through who he really is and realize why he live for. But because of Jonathan’s journey, Alex’s grandfather had untied his long locked memory and to face the truth of his past. Before he had realized the past, Alex’s grandfather got mad all the time for little things. After Alex’s grandfather had finally faced the past of himself, he stared to smile, seems like he suddenly understand everything.
The old woman who lived in a house herself, also a collector. She collected all other people’s stuff just to wait for other people’s famliy or friends to came back, and gave them back. This woman was the one who saw Alex’s grandfather escape back in the war time. She had spend all her life lived alone, do not know how world had changed, still wondered when the war would be over. She has her own past, but also others.
Nomatter the memories were from the past, or would be in the future, do not forget that we are the ones who is making the histories, who is creating the memories. But to realize and understand the real side of past, to face the difficulties, that is what memory really use for.
