Heart of the Passage:Luke 19

Overview

It is now the final week of 1 Jesus' earthly life. In the city of Jerusalema city astir with the excitement of the feast dayssome are prepared to welcome a King, while others prepare for an execution. Jesus Himself draws the battle lines by driving the moneychangers from the temple. From then on, the religious leaders double their efforts to trap Him in a treasonous statement. Though His hour of anguish draws near, Jesus continues die activities that have characterized His earthly ministry: teaching, healing, confronting, consoling.

Your Daily Walk

A "little thing" is great or small, depending upon whose yardstick it is measured by. What often seems insignificant to us has great significance to God. Zacchaeus was a litde man who had achieved prominence by trampling others underfoot. He was a notorious sinner (19:7) and a despised tax collector, but he was curious enough to climb a tree in order to see Jesus. As the Savior passed by, He called Zacchaeus to commitment. . . and Zacchaeus responded.
A nameless widow came to the temple to give her seemingly insignificant offering to Goda mere pittance compared to the enormous sums being contributed by others. And yet Jesus declared that she gave more than all the others combined.
What is a seemingly insignificant feature in your life? Your income . . . your stature . . . your personality . . . your family background? Use it to complete this sentence: "Lord, I realize that in the eyes of the world my ______ means very little. But faithfulness in a little thing is a great thing with You, and so I give it back to You right now, asking that You use my 'two mites' in a mighty way to Your glory!"

Insight

The Five-Hundred-Year Foal (19:30)
It was no accident Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a young donkey. Though the colt had been tied up by its owner only hours before (19:29-35), prophetically the animal had been saddled and ready for more than 500 yearssince the days of Zechariah (9:9)!

Adage

Let us at least give according to our income, lest God make our incomes match our gifts.
