當Bee Gees樂團的三兄弟感覺到Disco的風潮已過，開始要轉變寫歌的風格，此首《Islands in the Stream》即是以「節奏藍調」的曲風，原是要寫給黑人歌手Marvin Gaye唱的 ( 這位Gaye老兄是位當紅歌手，1984，因為和父親發生衝突，在45歲生日的前一天，被父親用他所送的手槍，槍擊身亡。)，後來不知為何找上了Kenny Rogers，但Rogers在錄音室磨了4天後告訴Barry Gibb，他甚至不喜歡這首歌，Barry建議找Dolly Parton一起來錄 ( Dolly當時也在同一家錄音室 )，Dolly加入後，替此曲有了不一樣的詮釋，而終告錄成。另，Gibb兄弟在錄此曲時也做了聲音的貢獻。

此曲作為Rogers 1983發行的專輯《Eyes That See in the Dark》的領頭單曲，成績嚇嚇叫，在告示牌熱門、當代成人及鄉村榜都登上了冠軍，獲得RIAA銷售超過200萬張的「白金唱片」認證。也是Rogers和Dolly分別睽違了3年、2年的第2首冠軍曲 ( 之前倆人僅各有一首 )。2005，美國鄉村音樂電視頻道( CMT )將此曲列為歷來最佳鄉村歌曲二重唱的第一名。

此曲的歌名係取材自小說家海明威 ( Ernest Hemingway ) 於死後的1970所發行的書名 ( 海明威最著名的小說為《老人與海》，替他在1953、54分別贏得了普立茲小說獎及諾貝爾文學獎。而他卻在1961以獵槍轟頭自殺身亡，享年61歲。←尊重生命，請撥專線1995。)，Rogers和Dolly也因此曲建立了雙方的友誼，之後也陸續有合作，直至2017年Rogers退休。而Bee Gees也在1997錄唱自己的版本，收錄在專輯《One Night Only》中。
