老歌亂談(534)Helpless
此首《Helpless》為加拿大籍歌手Neil Young所寫，1969年早期曾和他的伴唱樂隊Crazy Horse一起錄唱過。後Neil Young加入三人樂團組合，成為Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ( 簡稱CSNY )，此樂團成員認為這首歌更適合由他們來唱，因而收錄在CSNY於1970發行的首張專輯《Déjà Vu / 似曾相識》中。
這首歌的第一句歌詞「There is a town in North Ontario」(在北安大略省的一個城鎮 )，一般人都認為該城鎮指的是Neil Young的家鄉Omemee ( 原住民語，意思為「鴿子」) Neil Young在後來接受訪談時澄清，說這並非為如字面上的實際城鎮，而是一種感覺。其實，也可以是一些城鎮的化身，安大略省的Omemee只是其中之一。
這首歌的旋律結構雖然簡單，僅以D-A-G三個和絃重複進行，而樂團在錄唱時卻嘗試了許多不同的版本，最後才決定以較為和緩的節奏進行。1973，Bob Dylan的《Knocking on Heaven's Door》的曲調和此曲甚為相似，由於《Helpless》在1976又重新發行，不明就裡的人還以為是Bob Dylan「被坑了」，實在是相當的反諷。
Neil Young出生於多倫多，Omemee卻是他開始上學和成長的地方。有人認為Neil Young唱的是對Omemee的鄉愁，其實也是，幼年時常會覺得被困在家鄉難以施展抱負，感到無奈和無助，待離家多年後，才發覺心中最美麗的地方其實還是故鄉。
以下所貼為Neil Young在The Band樂團1976告別演唱會 ( The Last Waltz ) 之版本，在黑暗中合音的是知名的加拿大女歌手，也是該演唱會來賓之一的 Joni Mitchell。
