對於離開家鄉農村赴大城市工作打拼的人來說，往往未能如預期，雖然找到工作留了下來，但其實生活過得是頗為辛苦，而為了維持愚蠢的自尊 ( 家鄉親友以為他過得很好 )，不願就此打包行李，故也只有在夢中才能回到所思念的故鄉。Bobby Bare的這首《Detroit City》，就是訴說著遊子的這番心境。
這首歌在1963推出後獲得告示牌鄉村單曲排行榜第6名，同時也成為了當時鄉村音樂的流行曲風。同年，這首歌也為Bobby Bare贏得了一座最佳鄉村和西部歌曲的葛萊美獎。
聽這首歌，也很容易會想起The Becah Boys的《Sloop John B》，兩首歌的旋律和涵意都有些類似。Tom Jones 在1968也翻唱此曲，但味道還是差了一些。
