【Business Biz】Stan Shih’s Lecture on Change (20030409)

Stan Shih, chairman of Acer Inc., is one of the most distinguished entrepreneurs in Taiwan. The company he founded in 1976 is now among the world's top ten branded PC vendors. Acer conducts marketing and service operations across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. In addition to offering a broad spectrum of IT services, Acer is also a leading innovator of e-business, providing MegaMicro e-enabling solutions that combine IT products with a range of Micro services delivered via Acer's Mega infrastructure. Stan is my most admirable entrepreneur in Taiwan, because of his passion and courage of creating a worldwide brand. During ’70 and ’80, there were very few Taiwanese computer manufacturers willing to run a self-owned brand, because it cost too much to make big money. Mr. Shih was a maverick then, and he decided to operate a company with its own brand. After almost 30 years, Acer Inc. now is Taiwan’s pride, and their products are recognized as high-class goods in many countries.

But things haven’t always proceeded smoothly. In 1991 and 2000, Acer started two times of organization re-engineering, for solving its struggling operation. Stan said that it’s hard to forecast future, and enterprises are usually “learning by doing.” As difficulties come, the pain of changing follows. Most staff resists organizational change and refuse to harmony with already decided policies. As a leader, Stan manipulated some ways, including media, to create a forced-to-change atmosphere. Then it became easier to persuade managers to promote reengineering. He has realized that even the business is OK so far; he has to start another change in his company for better tomorrow. “The lost (money) is the most valuable tuition!” he said humorously. This story taught us the art of using more tools to help things go well. Besides, the more inside observation, the more farsighted viewpoints you bring up.

For me, the most influential part of this lecture was Stan shared something about himself. He said he’s a man who always keeps investing himself/company for the future, learning to unstop, and never giving up. He considered admitting lost can bring real winning, and reminded us to take responsibility and to work with heart. Stan planned to retire at 60, and then will go training more people to develop concepts of innovation, integration, and international marketing.

I really think he’s a legend in Taiwan, and his spirit inspires me very much. Comparing with other tycoons in Taiwan, I feel Stan Shih’s success is coming more from hard working, instead of talent or chance. By the way, his new Tablet PC impressed me a lot. We can say the lecture was also a good show for their new product.
