【Business Biz】 Morris’ Lecture on Org. Change (20030309)
This Friday, I went to Morris Chang’s lecture. Morris Chang is Chairman and CEO of the world No.1 semiconductor manufacturing company--- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd (TSMC). He has been elected by Taiwan business operators to be the most honorable entrepreneur for several times.
In this speech, he mentioned about “Organizational Change,” including the processes and the culture. Mr. Chang shared with us in his company’s working on creating the new culture. The content of this change included “Quality and Reliability Leadership,” “Requesting for Innovation,” “Individual Accountability,” and “Dynamic Leadership.” Each topic had its core concept, but what made me impressed were “Requesting for Innovation” and “Dynamic Leadership.”
We’ve all known about the importance of innovation for a company. But here, the keynote of this culture mission is to ask the managers to request their subordinates to innovate. In brief, every employee has to work hard on thinking, instead of acting according to the rules. Someone may say it’s no more than a common sense, but it’s really a hard job to be implemented with order in a big enterprise that has thousands of workers.
The concept of Dynamic Leadership is a little like “virtual organization,” “task force,” and “project management.” But it more emphasizes the value of teamwork with colleagues who are from other departments. In a leading company, there are talents everywhere. Everybody wants to prove her/his ability, so how to evaluate their performance is becoming another headache for managers. Employees with dynamic leadership look like having more managerial skills such as flexibility and organized thoughts.
I admire Morris Chang a lot. Although semiconductor industry isn’t my goal of job, I still keep an eye on what he acts. He is absolutely a foreseeing leader, and he cares about the balance between innovation and discipline. In my first chance to be face to face with him, I observed his calm and unhurried. He was also smart to answer the questions from the audience. I’ve learned a lot from his lecture.
