Energy Systems:

This area involves research in the production, distribution, and use of electric energy. Present investigations are concerned with electromechanical devices for pulsed power applications, advanced electrical machines, power system-related analyses, simulation of power systems, energy system economics and optimization, open-access transmission, energy efficiency and demand-side management, power system harmonics, power quality, and power electronics.

III. Admission requirement

u A typical successful applicant to the ECE Graduate Program has a GPA (grade point average) in upper division coursework (junior and senior level, or comparable) of at least 3.5 on a 4.0scale (or comparable GPA).

u A typical successful applicant to the ECE Graduate Program has scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) that fall within the ranges listed below. These ranges are based on the average GRE scores of students admitted to the program for the 2007-2008 academic year:

    Verbal: 550 – 800

   Quantitative: 750 – 800

   Analytical: 5.0 - 6.0

u Complete the Texas Common Application. This is the fastest, easiest way for you to submit your application and is our preferred method for receiving applications.

u Pay your application fee: International applicants who have not previously been enrolled at the University must pay a nonrefundable processing fee of seventy-five dollars (U.S. $75.00) for all majors except MBA (B16100), MBA Option II (B16105), and graduate dual degree programs

u Submit official transcripts to GIAC: You must provide an official copy of the academic transcript from every senior college attended. If documents are written in a language other than English, complete and official English translations must be provided together with the original language records. Each transcript (mark sheet) should contain a complete record of studies at the institution from which it is issued. You can speed the processing of your application by having your transcript(s) sent electronically.

u Submit official GRE/GMAT and either the TOEFL or the Academic Examination of the IELTS test scores to GIAC. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for the University of Texas at Austin is 6882. Test scores sent to this code are made available to all graduate departments.

u The Texas Common Application is the University's application to graduate school. It is submitted to the Graduate and International Admissions Center GIAC.:

Ignore the PDF letter of reference form. The ECE will send an email to your referees after you complete the ECE Graduate Applicant’s Information Form so that they may submit their letters of reference online.

Make sure that you select the appropriate graduate application based on your citizenship and residency status

Make sure to choose the correct Graduate Program of Study. For example, if your primary interest is Computer Engineering, make sure you select Electrical and Computer Engineering

NOTE: If your primary interest is Circuit Design, please select Electrical and Computer Engineering (Circuits) as your Graduate Program of Study

u Resume: Post your resume on the Internet before beginning to fill out the ECE Graduate Applicant’s Information Form.

u The ECE Graduate Applicant’s Information Form: Please note that you must complete and submit the Texas Common Application before you can begin the ECE Graduate Applicant’s Information Form.

IV. Process & Mailing Address

Official transcripts from each university attended need to be mailed directly to the GIAC. In addition, you must arrange for Education Testing Service (ETS) to send your test scores (GRE and/or TOEFL). The GIAC does not accept photocopies of transcripts or unofficial test scores. Accordingly, please direct all inquiries relating to your official admissions application, application fee, and official transcripts and test scores to the GIAC.

VI. Additional note for Int’l Applicant

    For international students, an official score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) of 600 (paper test) or 250 (computer-based test) is considered average for studentsadmitted to the University of Texas at Austin .

Please note that effective October 1, 2007 , the TOEFL is now offered in the form of an

Internet-based exam, which is also accepted. The equivalent score is 100.
