Emulsifyed Sugar Scrubs

Because of your post about wanting an a scrub that isn't like pouring an oil slick into your shower I'm posting my own personal recipe for my emulsified body scrub. This one will make your skin feel like it's been moisturized with lotion when it's rinsed off instead of the thick heavy feeling you get from other scrubs made of just oil and an sugar or salt. While some may like those types of scrubs there are many who shy away from scrubs because of that.

If you ever used an oil/sugar scrub you will notice right away that it needs to be stirred before it can be used. Which is one thing that will set this one apart. It is a nice creamy texture as you can see by the following photo.

After it's rinsed off it leaves your skin feeling like it's just been moisturized with lotion, and so smooth and soft because of the sugar. But salt or brown sugar can also be used.

14.5% Butters Use your favorite butter or a mixture of two or more of your favorite butters.

60% Liquid Oils Use the liquid oil of your choice here. Coconut Oil also falls into this category, but if you use it keep the amount limited so most of your oils are of the actual liquid variety.

.5% Vitamin E This is to give the oils a longer shelf life, since vit E is used to help the oils from going rancid.

11% Emulsifying Wax

9% Stearic Acid

5% Bees Wax

I call the above my master mix of the emulsified body scrub.
Then you need the following to mix it up correctly.

For my recipe I'm going to make 15 ounces of my master mix this does not include the weight of any sugar or salt you wish to add. I prefer to write my recipes in ounces but I always weigh everything in grams because it's more accurate. So I always write both out on my recipe pages.

Shea Butter ~ 2.175 ounces ~62 grams
Rice Bran Oil ~ 6.75 ounces ~ 191 grams
Olive Oil ~ 2.25 ounces ~ 64 grams
Vitamin E Oil ~ .075 ounces ~ 2 grams
Emulsifying Wax ~ 1.65 ounces ~ 47 grams
Stearic Acid ~ 1.35 ounces ~ 38 grams
Beeswax ~ .75 ounces ~ 21 grams

Melt the above ingredients. And once everything is melted let it cool down. Give it a stir every once in awhile. As it cools it will thicken up. Almost like well made powdered sugar frosting, one that is not thick but not runny either, or a pudding. Here is a photo that I just took. Now this is only the above ingredients. You do not need to add the preservative yet if you are using this as a master mix.

Now on to mixing up your scrub.

You will to use equal parts of your master mix to your white sugar, brown sugar or salt. And mix that in. And mix in 2% by weight your fragrance and 1% liquapar oil. To figure your fragrance and liquapar oil you want to use the total weight being used. So if you have 15 ounces of master mix and 15 ounces of sugar you want to figure for 30 ounces.

48.5% Master Mix
48.5% Sugar, Salt or Brown Sugar
2% Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil
1% LiquaPar Oil *

* I know there are many preservatives on the market, but they are not created equal and can't be interchanged. You need the right preservative for the right product. I did a lot of research and found that liquapar oil would be one of the few choices that works the best for a sugar scrub. While a scrub does not contain water a scrub still needs a proper chemical preservative because water will be introduced into the container while it's being used. And safety must come first. And 1% isn't exactly enough to worry about the dangers. Store bought products have much higher amounts of preservatives.

For the above recipe of 15 ounces of your master mix you will want to use the following....
master mix ~ 15 ounces ~ 412 grams
white sugar ~ 15 ounces ~ 412 grams
Fragrance ~ .6 ounces ~ 17 grams
Liqua Par Oil ~ .3 ounces ~ 9 grams

Mix it all together and bottle it into your clean and labeled containers. Jars work best with this, bottles would be difficult to use.

I love this type of scrub and swear by it !!!
But it took me a long time to formulate this recipe, so please keep it for yourself to use or sell the finished product. And don't forget gifts !!!! This makes an awesome gift for friends and family.

If i wasn't clear enough just ask,
