today is the first class of ”intro to social phycology”. I was really excited about this before the class and after the class. This is the thing I am interested in. We are going to study ”symbolism” in this course: why people act in certain ways, advertsing and consumerism, media, identity, emotional being, happiness, and so on. It seems super interesting to me.I love those topics. I like to think of the meanings under a certain thing that seems to be simple and normal.For example, in the second hour of the class,the instructor asked all of us to go out and observe any phenomenon,especially the interaction between people. There was one person who brought back a wondeful example.He went to the bookstore and noticed that there were many new students and their paretns buying UofO products.So,we were discussing why people wanted to buy those porducts.It is more complex than just ”buying” a product.Those people are also buying the ”status”,the provement of ”higher education”,the ”association” they are with the UofO.Those products are not cheap,so the parents feel proud that they can buy their children those things.There is a special bond between the parents and the kids.There ares still lots of things that can be discussed upon this topic.I just want to give an idea of how it is like.
It is my fourth socilogy class.I have taken of course the intro to soc class,sociology of mass media,and social inequality.I have once thought of being a sociology major,but I figured that I was still more into design/art.I am really glad I can take this class before I graduate,and I still want to take more sociology classes in the future. It kind of makes me feel the reality in some way.
