SUBARU Impreza WRX STi2.5
Once again, Subaru is trying a new design language on the new STi. Penned by formal design chief of Alfa Romeo, Andreas Zapatinas, the new STi has the familiar Alfa look with its 3 section grill. Better aero work also featured in this new design. The look is unorthodox and sharp; the huge 3 section rear spoilers easily catch everybody’s attention on the road.
As the top model in the Subaru’s line up, STi is billed as an ultimate street performer worthy for the race track. The 300 hp, 2.5L H4 engine coupled with a close ratio 6-speed manual transmission provided the go power. The road feel is excellent through the tightly tuned suspension; the manual transmission’s shifter provided quick and accurate shifts. The pedal’s spacing is perfect for quick pedal works and heel-and-toe downshifting.
Launching the STi is as easy as fully press down the gas pedal. G-forces build as the rev climbing on the high-output turbo charged engine; up shift to the second gear, the pressure of the G-forces continues. The only time the pressure let up is when we released the gas pedal. This kind of go-power can be brought down by the standard Brembo brakes. The red Brembo calibers nestled inside the gold BBS wheels declaring the pedigree of this
performance beast.
In the corners, the STi exhibits better than average control. There is minor under-steering entering a curve, but quickly brought back under control with the 4-wheel drive system. In a typical Subaru’s “under enter, exit over” fashion, a driver needs to be very careful with throttle and steering control attacking tight curves. The mood changes when the speed picks up; at high speed corners, the car is neutral and fast.
We feel the best place to experience this remarkable vehicle is at high speed environment; high speed straights and medium high speed corners are places to fully exhibit its potential. It is hard to believe we can buy this remarkable vehicle for only around $35k, this is truly a performance bargain.
