《何人的唇　我唇吻過》


米蕾 (Edna St.Vincent Millay，1892－1950)，女詩人，生於美國緬因州；其抒情詩體清麗婉約，詩風深受十九世紀浪漫主義影響，素有“女拜倫”（female Byron）之譽，1920年以詩集《豎琴編者及其它》
(The Harp Weaver and Other Poems)贏得該年普利玆詩歌獎。

米蕾作風大膽前衛，為雙性戀者，且公開挑戰當年傳統的性觀念：
宣稱女人有權像男人一樣縱欲放蕩，堪稱當今“女性情欲自主”之先驅。

1923年她第二本詩集《荊棘叢中的數枚無花果》（A Few Figs from Thistles）問世，其中的《第一枚無花果》(First Fig) ，即引起廣泛議論：

　　But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--　　但我的仇人呀，我的朋友--
　　It gives a lovely light！　　　　　　　　它給予的光亮　多麼美好！


首句“My candle burns at both ends”雖源自1611年譯為英文的十七世紀古法語“brusler la chandelle par lex deux bouts”，但經米蕾引用，卻與其行其性極為貼切傳神；末句頌揚生命不在短長而在明黯，尤其顯示米蕾對自己的縱情縱欲雖有所感，卻也無憾。

然則風華茂盛終非久長，年過三十的米蕾似感年華將逝，
於1923年寫下了傷春悲秋的十四行名詩《何人的唇　我唇吻過》：

　What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
　I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
　Under my head till morning; but the rain
　Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
　Upon the glass and listen for reply;

　　　何人的唇　我唇吻過，何處　何故，
　　　我已忘懷，何人的臂　曾經枕我
　　　以頸　直至天明；唯有這雨
　　　今夜盈滿幽靈，輕扣且嘆息
　　　於窗上玻璃　且傾聽　待我回應；


　And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
　For unremembered lads that not again
　Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.

　　　而在我心中翻攪著沉默的痛楚
　　　為已忘懷的那些男孩　不復
　　　在午夜向我奔求　帶著輕呼。


　Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree,
　Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
　Yet know its boughs more silent than before:

　　　猶如寒冬兀立的孤樹，
　　　不知鳥兒隻隻飛逝，
　　　卻覺枝頭愈見寂清：


　I cannot say what loves have come and gone;
　I only know that summer sang in me
　A little while, that in me sings no more.

　　　無法訴說多少愛情來來往往；
　　　僅知豔夏曾在我心中放歌
　　　片刻，而我心已不再吟唱。


此後米蕾雖仍縱情聲色，卻於1931年發表了抒情詩集《致命的會晤》
（Fatal Interview），並被譽為直追十四行詩泰斗莎士比亞；
然而持續的酗酒喀藥，終於導致於58歲時的一個早晨，
米蕾在昏沉中摔下樓梯扭斷了脖子，燃盡了她的生命之燭。
