以下是大法官Anthony Kennedy的判詞
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love,
fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming martial union, two people become somthing greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in this case demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemend to live in loneliness, exclude from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right. The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reserved.
It is so ordered.

世上沒有一個結合比婚姻來得更深刻，因為那體現了最崇高的愛、忠誠、奉獻、犧牲和家庭。締結婚姻盟誓讓兩個人超越了原來的自己。正如那些訴求者引證了婚姻的愛可以一直延續，甚至跨越了生死。指摘他／她們不尊重婚姻實在是一個誤解，他們苦苦爭取正說明了他們尊重，而且决意實行。
他們冀望的是不要在孤單中渡日、被文明社會最古老的制度拒諸門外。他們爭取的是法律面前平權的尊嚴，而憲法給予他們這權利。
