Brave New World

Dark City

My interpretation of the scene was that, at that point of the movie, Preston had become a master at controlling his own emotions. So he has a strong emotional response when he discovers the real level of the web of betrayal that engulfed him - but at that point he ***chooses*** to turn to the most basic of emotions: none at all - and he becomes a robotic, unspeakabily perfect, unstoppable killing machine.

I like also the alternate "explanation": that, at that very moment, he is telling the truth ("Not without incidents" ---> carnage on colossal scale ensues). However, just before that moment, Preston was not exactly lying: he was shocked by the revelation of what was really going on, and by the sudden understanding that he had, unwillingly, condemned and betrayed the Resistance. When all of this sinks in, his rage reaches the breaking point: a flat line.

Anyway, no matter how your interpretation of the scene is, it is a great, GREAT scene.

The ending totally ruined this movie for me

Right. Someone already pointed out rather well about waiting until the right moment to take out everyone so i wont go into that. There are three points I would like to make towards the ending.

1) Preston is the best Gun Cleric on the planet.

2) Preston was driven by anger. When was the last time he had felt any emotion? when you dont have something for a while, the effects are stronger and more potent. Like... I dunno, an orgasm or if you hadnt eaten for a few days, any food would be delicous and would satisfy your hunger. Anger is usually a turning point or a driving force for a character in any action movie and it provides a way for them to do feats they wouldnt normally consider doing. It gives him the willpower to do it and the strength to. Point 1) and 2) make him a very potent force.

3) Yes, he probably could have taken out Father without wiping so many people out but here is why he did it.

IRONY

The drugs were created to supress emotion because things like ANGER caused world war III in the first place. So for his best Gun Cleric to turn against the system and use his anger to destroy the very thing designed to prevent violence and emotion. Its plain ol' irony and i think its a fantastic way to end a movie. The whole movie was practically building up to that awesome moment.

It was an inner conflict that bales character was fighting with the whole movie. Not all conflicts and fighting have to be tangible. This was all in his head and his emotions, trying to figure out and deal with these new feelings of emotions which he was not used to. The action sequences are completely secondary in this film, which is why i think the matrix is a terrrible way to compare this movie and is more of a contrast. I also see underlying meanings of how goverments try and prohibit society from speaking out and standing up for their rights, and how they basically make us on assembly line to obey all orders and laws. altogether, like i said the action sequences are secondary, this movie is more of a drama that delves into character study.
