Cautiously I started my job. To be honest, I didn’t have the least idea how to do that. I borrowed two soldiers from the head company, but we just stood there, not knowing how to get started.

Surely the room needed a new door and a better window—a one with a windowsill, and secondly, there were a lot of things in the room that nobody knew how to deal with. Furthermore, there are lots of things that “might be useful” in another warehouse one kilometer away. There were many “ardent” people that reached out their solicitous hands, but I still felt lonely in the face of so many I-don’t-knows.

The first day, I entered the office right after the troop finished running. After dinner, I went to the warehouse to see what was useful. It was hot and full of mosquitoes. A captain came with me because even if I find those books, I wouldn’t know which is useful and which is not! I didn’t sleep that day.

The second day, some people were allocated to my office to help me move out the wasted stuff. We moved two big iron cabinets from other battalions. With the cabinets, where I could place my books, I started to bibliographize them. I worked till dawn, and of course, I didn’t sleep again…

On the third day I borrowed two desks from other offices to make the room more office-like. Besides the desks there would always be two soldiers, who were assigned to help me paint the wall and install the door and windows. I’d chat with them when I was categorizing my books. I slept for three hours that day.

The Headquarters sent us some charts and diagrams to decorate the office on the fourth day. I had to nail them on the wall. I went to the bookstore to by some file clippers. The toughest thing was, some teaching materials must be written on the full-size paper. Fortunately, I can write some artistic words, and my father can write calligraphy. I asked my dad to do me a favor. Both my father and I didn’t sleep that night.

The fifth day is when the general would come. How could I ever sleep on that day? I kept asking people what else I could do to make it better. After five, I went straight to my room and hit the bed directly. Nobody even bothered to wake me up for the night rendezvous. I slept until 12 o’clock the following day…
