Last Wednesday, I attended a private event at Brookings. Taiwanese representative to the US Joseph Wu delivered a speech during the luncheon and this speech was also the first of a series of speeches centered on Taiwan in the coming months. He talked about the historical legacy of Taiwan and how Taiwan’s democracy functions. He admitted that the democracy in Taiwan is not mature; however, he asserted the importance of Taiwan’s democracy and its participation to the international arena. According to Joseph Wu, Taiwan can be a model of China’s democratization.

I am preparing for the upcoming dialogue, China-Japan Dialogue and it will take place on Friday. So far, I have been in contact with Georgetown University, American University, SAIS, and George Washington University. More than 6 people told me that they wanted to come and I am expecting more people for a Korean intern in International Peace Institute wants to bring 7 people here. Hailey Kim, former intern in IMTD, also mentioned that she would like to bring some friends with her. I will contact them to know more details.

*News on Northeast Asia*
After the opposition party blocked the bill extending the naval mission in Indian Ocean, Japanese vessels were supposed to stop the mission after 1 November. However, Japan’s lower house has passed a bill to resume the naval mission in Afghanistan but with a limited scope on Monday November 12, 2007. Japanese ships used to provide battle ships with fuel and water. The new bill only allows Japanese ships to refuel and provide the ships of peaceful operations with water.
