Solitude

Solitude

(Walden, by Henry David Thoreau)

I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found th companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome, because he is employed; but when he comes home at night he cannot sit down in a room alone, at the mercy of this thoughts, but must be where he can “see the folks,” and recreate, and as he thinks remunerate himself for his day’s solitude; and hence he wonders how the student can sit alone in the house all night and most of the day without ennui and “the blues’; but he does not realize that the student, though in the house, is still at work in his field, and chopping in his woods, as the farmer in his, and in turn seeks the same recreation and society that the latter does, though it may be a more condensed form of it.

這是篇幼時一直想拜讀的, 現在讀來有種熟悉又陌生的感覺, 不確定上述的文字描述有錯否? 讀坐屋中任思緒翱翔, 可怕的是被孤獨吞噬那樣的恐懼!

copy several words from 123greeting news 25 May 2011 as underneath:
Do you know where is Iraq? Do you know what's the weather is like, there? How about Afghanistan? Any idea about the local culture? Have you seen the Hurt Locker? Body of Lies? Have you ever known how it feels to have a friend dying in your arms?

It's okay if you don't know. But remember to respect… This Memorial Day! Not everything in this world can be bought with a bagful of dollars or with influence. A soldier's duty is something that sometimes even goes beyond reasoning. One of those things that reminds us that we are human after all and we differ from wild animals. The sacrifice by an educated fellow American elevates the just not the patriotism towards our country, but in a collective thought gives us a reason to be fair to what we do–in the career we have chosen and the relationships we nurture.

My salute to the ones who brave the heat in the desert while we catch up on the latest blockbusters. My salute to the ones who laid their lives down so that we can live in peace on this Memorial Day.
