其實我覺得我很幸運，在求學階段遇到適合自己的老師啟發我的英文潛質，英文得為我最有成就感的科目；在大學又憑著自己的直覺，選得英文為主修；在多年的工作歷程中，又得以隨時與英文為伍，於是感受一個觀念或邏輯不再只單一憑藉中文，不像多數人學習英文的目的論，我更有機會去深層領略英文文字本身的內涵與意境；即使如此，也像母語一樣，許多過去看似簡單常見卻似懂非懂的辭句，到了一個相當的年紀或時機便自然通曉。

「The Rose」這首歌歌詞淺白、曲式從簡，許多歌手都曾經演唱，多年以來只是覺得這是一首再熟悉不過的流行歌曲。直到晚近，靜下心來、泡杯熱茶、翻開歌詞、反覆播放，所感受的一字一句全是情海浮沉下的倖存者的真言，所聆聽到的一聲一律盡是情場顛沛流離後的放逐者的感言；辭裡行間竟像是這幾年之際所擁有卻不自知的模具，我以肉身去復刻；音韻起伏就如同這來回之間所重蹈但不自覺的軌跡，我以心扉去痛徹。
