Boys’ singles: Yang, the pride of Taiwan
Sunday, June 8, 2008
By Benjamin Adler

Tsung-Hua Yang defeated Polish player Jerzy Janowicz to win the boy’s singles 6-3 7-6. Playing in his second Grand Slam final of the year after his defeat in the final of the Australian Open, Yang became the first player from Taiwan to win a singles’ title in a major championship.

“Losing to Bernard Tomic in Melbourne really motivated me to come here and win this tournament,” said Yang in his broken English with an endearing smile. Yang courageously changed his game and fought back from 0-5 in the second set, to defeat the talented but mentally fragile Janowicz.

“He’s an intelligent player, that’s his strength. He knows how to observe and adjust,” confirms his coach, Lehn Man. “I thought I was going to lose that set so I just took it point by point and tried something else,” explained Yang.

11 aces!

Standing at only 1.73m, Yang nonetheless has a big serve and hit down eleven aces to the 2.02m Pole’s five. He also has a backhand that is an exact copy of Michael Chang’s. The 17 year old right-hander from Taipei turned the match around in the tenth game of the second set when, leading at 5-4, Janowicz began to show more and more signs of nervousness.

At 40-30, No12 seed Yang won a long, intense rally with a backhand slice and it was all over for Janowicz.

The Polish player held his next service game thanks to some big serving but Yang levelled the set at 6-6. At 4-5 down in the tiebreak, the No591 player in the world hit two outstanding shots one of which was a sublime cross court forehand. A double fault from the Pole on match point and Yang was the winner.

Yang is now going to get ready for Wimbledon where he hopes to perform just as well. To think that he was almost packing his bags in the second round when his opponent, the Zimbabwean Takanyi Garanganza led 5-3 in the third set and held a match point before Yang managed to win 6-3 2-6 9-7.
