urban design--final 1
How can knowledge of urban design ideas improve the quality and use of the physical environment in Australia, or in my country, Taiwan? What are the origins of these ideas? What challenges do such ideas face?
Urban design plays a significant role in the urbanism movement. Most plans extend over a long period of time and influence a significant part of urban surroundings, as urban design combines architecture, landscape, protection of resources, traffic systems and open space in cities. The purpose of urban design is to create a high quality of urban life and meet the requirements of inhabitants. Basically, urban planning can be accompanied by differing social conditions or cultural environments. Therefore, it must alter styles to fit several diverse periods. Cities can represent the worth of, and reflect the dreams of, their inhabitants. They also contain life’s sensations and meanings. As a result, urban design is, by necessity, an important part of urbanization.
Nowadays urban design is more and more important in Taiwan. Urban planning has already occurred in the major cities, which have seen development on a huge scale and the establishment of major infrastructure. Planning has enhanced the quality of public space, especially, in the capital city, Taipei.
This essay will examine urban design ideas that have been converted into advancements for the environment in Taiwan, such as the transformation of industrial cities, new urbanism, and the creation of sustainable cities. Successful examples will be discussed later. Recently, urban civilization has dramatically changed in Taiwan. It not only enhances science, technology and people’s activities but also transforms social ideology. Consequently, urban design has been valued by most cities in Taiwan and this has innovated urban quality. On the other hand, there are conflicts between the former physical environment and the later one, and challenges result from alterations. Major points include population density, legislation and consumption of resource. As Government and designers confront these challenges, elements among historical culture and some new factors must be considered at the same time.
Taiwan is an island in East Asia. The island is 394 kilometers long and 144 kilometers wide, the area is 35,801 square kilometers and consists of steep mountains covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation. The capital is Taipei City where has the highest density of any region in Taiwan. Moreover, Kaohshiung is the biggest city in southern Taiwan as well as its most signicificant port and industrial area. In 2002, Taiwan entered the World Trade Organization (WTO), and this radically affected economic development, enhancing globalization and Taiwan’s stature on the international stage. The population in Taiwan increased rapidly after the economic boom in 1960s. As mentioned above, urban design is becoming important. (http://etds.lib.ntu.ed u.tw/main/index)
