老歌亂談(801)Goodnight Irene
這是一首美國流傳的通俗民謠，寫歌者已不可考，黑人民謠藍調歌手Lead Belly於1933首先錄唱，據他說，這首歌也是由他叔叔口中聽來的。
這位Lead Belly老兄於1918因企圖謀殺罪入獄，但因將自己寫的歌寄給典獄長 ( 典獄長應也有親自聽他唱過 )，而被視為表現良好，關了最起碼的7年後於 1924獲得釋放。熟知這位老兄於1930又因相同犯行罪名被關，卻在3年後被人類及音樂歷史學者John Lomax和兒子Alan ( 父子倆人替Library of Congress---「國會圖書館」收集具歷史意義的歌曲 ) 發現，認為Lead Belly的音樂描述美國黑人的拼博，佔了歷史的一大塊，具有保存的價值，也因而替Lead Belly遊說並成功獲釋。Lead Belly兩度因音樂讓自己重獲自由，也算是項記錄了。
Lead Belly於1949因「漸凍人症 (ALS)」病故，享年61歲。在他生前，他的此首《Irene》從未獲致商業上的成功。而在Lead Belly死後一年，美國民謠團體The Weavers的版本在告示牌最佳銷售排行榜的冠軍寶座待了13週。之後其他的翻唱者也不少，像是Jerry Lee Lewis、Johnny Cash、The Chieftains、Tom Waits 和 Peter, Paul and Mary等，而各自在歌詞上會有些變更。
此曲也被英國足球隊Bristol Rovers的球迷當作啦啦隊歌，原本只是1950在主場與Plymouth Argyle隊賽前放煙火時播的歌曲，而在接下來的比賽日，由於Bristol Rovers輕易就取得領先優勢，Plymouth Argyle隊一些球迷覺得贏球無望而提前離場，因而被Bristol Rovers球迷嘲弄，以此曲唱出「Goodnight, Argyle」，自此沿唱迄今。
