此曲為美國樂團The Left Banke的鍵盤手Michael Brown與另兩人所合寫，1966由樂團錄唱發行，在排行榜停留了13週，最高達到了第5名，是為該樂團的招牌熱門曲。之後，「滾石音樂雜誌」將此曲列為歷來500首最佳歌曲的第220名。
歌曲中的Renee確有其人，是名為Renee Fladen-Kamm的金髮美女，也是當時該團貝士手Tom Finn的女友。Michael Brown在見到這位Renee時只有16歲，應該是難掩其少男情懷的怦然心動，於一個月後寫出此曲。更自爆，在錄音室錄製此曲時，由於Renee在控制室觀看，害他緊張到手不斷地發抖，根本無法彈琴，只能先離開錄音室，待緩和後再回來完成。之後Michael Brown又寫了兩首關於這位Renee的歌曲：《Pretty Ballerina》和《She May Call You Up Tonight》，前者也成為了該團的熱門曲 ( #13 )。

翻唱此曲的歌手眾多。1968，美國黑人合唱團體The Four Tops在靈魂單曲和熱門榜分獲15及14名。1993，Rick Price的翻唱版分別在澳洲及德國得到21及52名。Linda Ronstadt和Ann Savoy也在2006推出她們的版本。
The Left Banke樂團是Michael Brown於1965所組成，但他自己在1967年末就先離團，原因不明。有人認為是樂團未能繼續推出暢銷曲；也有人認為他和Eric Clapton有著相同的情結 ( Clapton因愛上好友George Harrison的老婆，而自英國避走美國，最後仍抱得美人歸。)

Renee Fladen-Kamm於1967結婚，但並非嫁給貝士手Tom Finn，後於1974離婚。Michael Brown之後的音樂事業發展平平，2012曾與The Left Banke短暫復合參與演出。2015死於心臟病，享年65歲。
