1911年，有一位巡迴牧師Rev. W. A. Fletcher，正搭火車要前往他在印地安區的分駐點，而由於他的老婆懷孕臨盆在即，希望屆時他能在身旁一起迎接這個新生命的到來，但Fletcher認為傳教工作還是應該列為優先，故仍毅然前往。此時的他，其實是有些沮喪的，在此心境之下，寫出了這首歌詞。巧的是，火車鄰座是一位福音音樂的推廣者J. R. Baxter，注意到了這些富有詩意的字句，出了美金2元將之買下。後來再將這些文字譜上曲，即是這首《Farther Along》( 歌名的意思是循著宗教的路繼續前行，當然，最後可能會是去到了天堂。→ 如主題圖片 )。自此，這首歌在福音音樂場域，很快地成為了一首流行曲迄今。

此曲歷來翻唱者眾多，曲風從福音到鄉村到抒情都有。較出名的有Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris於1987合錄的版本；貓王Elvis Presley1967的則為慢版的抒情風。另外有位Ike Turner老兄，將此曲改寫改編為福音版的《Father Alone》，其和Tina Turner合唱的版本，1974還獲得葛萊美獎的提名。

許多人以為這是一首古老的名謠，而誤認為是屬於「公共財」。其實這首歌從1937開始就有版權。至於哪個翻唱版好聽，就見仁見智了。
