Gray Lewis是美國知名諧星Jerry Lewis的兒子。他在14歲時收到的生日禮物是一套爵士鼓，想當然耳的就練將起來。18歲時找了4個朋友共組樂團，自稱是「Playboys」，而此團名之後也一直未作變更。但當時樂團的主唱是吉他手而非Gray Lewis，或因為如此，樂團在剛出道時，是由其母親默默地出資來協助，顯然其父Jerry Lewis並不熱衷支持。

The Playboys樂團去「迪斯耐樂園」應徵試唱時，Gray Lewis並未表明其有個名人父親的身份。駐唱後沒多久，樂團即相當的受歡迎，也經常滿座。此時，唱片製作人Snuff Garrett被Jerry Lewis多年的朋友Les Brown告知，年輕的Lewis在迪斯耐樂園表演。在聽過了他們的演唱之後，Garrett認為或許可利用Jerry Lewis的知名度來多賣一些唱片，故要求將Lewis的名字加在樂團名之前，而成了「Gray Lewis & The Playboys」。
Garrett將樂團帶進錄音室準備要錄這首《This Diamond Ring》時，依照Lewis的說法，樂團不能公開擔任伴奏 ( 應該是囿於當時其他的合約 )。這怎麼辦？為了確保這首歌的成功，Garrett找了一些知名的特約樂師來作「槍手」。但這樣的安排後來也出了狀況--- Garrett經由Jerry Lewis的關係，安排樂團上「蘇利文劇場 ( The Ed Sullivan Show )」，該節目一向的規矩是要唱現場的，但這些團員根本無法複製出當初錄音時的伴奏效果 ( 其中也涉及了錄音的技巧 )。經過折衝，由Gray Lewis先親自以伴唱帶預唱錄好，屆時大家只是對個嘴及假裝彈奏做個樣子。
其實這首《This Diamond Ring》在稍早之前，是由Sammy Ambrose先行推出，但卻是Lewis的版本先進入告示牌「Bubbling Under」排行榜 ( # 101 )，1965年1月，此兩個版本同時進榜 ( Lewis仍維持在 #101，而Ambrose則是在 #117 )。接下來，Ambrose跌出了榜外，而Lewis又另進入了告示牌熱門100的排行榜 ( # 65 )，然後一路攀升，到1965/2/20，已站上了熱門100排行榜的冠軍位置。
Gray Lewis覺得大家常曲解了這首歌的意思。他認為許多人之所以喜歡這首歌，是以為這是首讓情人漸漸地在一起的歌。甚至有人告訴他說要結婚了，就是因為這首《This Diamond Ring》，他回說：真的嗎？其實他心裡想說的是，這是首分手歌哩！
