La science des reves @ BC (23 Nov 06)
Last night, it was so great that i could watch "La Science des Reves" when "French Cinepanorama" has not yet begun. The Film’s directed & written by Michel Gondry who is the also the director of Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Human Nature & many MTVs and Commercials, cast my favourite actor, Gael Garcia Bernal as Stepane & my actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg as Stepanie.
The film is unexpectedly hilarious that makes you laugh to death every 5 minutes, but in fact it’s a very sad film in a way. I’m not going to tell the plot outline of the film coz everyone could see the description on net, in papers, on mag....
While watching the film, i had a very exciting feeling as all those visual effects, the photography, the MV filming techniques, the scenes are exactly what we see in our dreams, it’s like i’m looking through my eyes while dreaming, it’s so amazing. it’s very surreal as our dream is always weird & surreal that u can’t explain. I like how it creates the pictures when we close our eyes and are about to sleep, we see some colours moving around, it’s abit like a kaleidoscope. Also it’s so great to see one dream come after another, it’s very true that we make dreamssss, changing scenes, one after another, suddenly go from one place to another and then another.
About the main character, Stephane, he can be mentally ill or mentally retarded/disabled, has poor social skill and practical skills, whatever, we won’t be able to get the real correct answer anyway, so i’m not going to think too much abt it. In the film, he’s always unable to distinguish dream from reality, dreams - including all those dreams he makes while sleeping, day-dreams & all the imagination, you may find it ridiculous & abnormal that someone could act like this, but think! Are you 100% sure you’re able to distinguish dream from reality?
I believe most of us have had experiences that we were disturbed by dreams we had at night, e.g. we dream of our beloved ones die, our bf/gf leave us... when you wake up, you feel sad, you’re worried, you may cry, in the rest of the day(s), you’re haunted by your dreams, you’re worried your beloved one’s life will be in danger, you’re afraid your partner will really leave you. So, dream & reality, they’re indeed interrelated to each other, your dream just reflects what u’ve experienced in "reality" & how you act in your daily life is affected by your subconsciousness.
Besides our sleeping dream, there’s something called day-dream, it simply comes from our imagination, you day-dream of the gal you love, you dream u kiss her and do many other things, then you’re happy, so are you nuts? it’s never really happened. sometimes you see your boss/colleagues looking at you in a strange way, you would think & imagine if they’re doing something behind you, if they dislike you. your bf/gf hasn’t called you for a few days, you imagine he/she got an affair, you’re sad, you’re depressed and even cry. have you experienced that before? they all come from your imagination but you’re so harassed by that and start to believe in your own imagination as if all those things did really happen, you’re ruined by your imagination.
Stephane falls in love with Stephanie, he’s not sure if she likes him too, he dares not show his love to her, he has dreams about her, & gradually starts to believe she really doesnt like him though she’s not done anything that shows it, he believes she got a bf and lots & lots. he wishes he could find out what to do about her in his dreams, so he keeps sleeping and wishes to see her in dreams, but the fact is that it prevents him from getting closer to her, the more he loves her, the more he wanna find out what to do, he goes into dreams and is getting away from her, and driving her away, so far away, day by day.
It’s so sad to see this film, coz it happens to many of us. love, friendship, relationship, all the ships play a large part in our life, i just wanna say, things do not always turn out as what we expect, in your deepest mind you expect one thing, but in reality, it may be another thing, but we can’t just escape as if what Stephane does, we can’t just sleep & keep dreaming. Try to open your heart to get rid of the wall between you & another. If you’re suspicious of or doubt something, do find out the truth and face it instead of making your own story. sometimes, you’re sad and there’re ppl seeing you like that wanna help you out but the most important is still you have to help yourself.
Seeing Stephane, it’s like seeing the me in the past, i’m sure i dont wanna be a pathetic person like him anymore. La Science des Reves inspires me a lot, the most sincere film i’ve ever seen, it’s surely the best of the year on my list. Thanks Cell Lee for the film ticket!
The ending of the film is open-ended. though Tristan says Stephane will never be happy, he & Stephanie won’t have a happy ending, I view the ending in a different way, I believe Stephane finally realizes Stephanie likes him after the dream, with the horse, forest & water....
I wanna dedicate a song that appears in the film, by Velvet Underground - After Hours.
