MDTimes’ Short Story winners receive prizes

The winners of the Macau Daily Times First Short Story competition in the English, Chinese and Portuguese language received their awards yesterday at a ceremony held in the Portuguese Bookshop.

Zenon Arthur Siloran Udani, assistant professor at the University of Macau, wrote ‘Mommy, come home’, the winning English story.
Mia Thayer aged 16, first runner-up with ‘Silent Cries’ and Kit Kellen, professor at the University of Macau, 2nd runner-up with ‘Denial’, were absent, and will be handed their prizes later on.
Champion of the Chinese language version, Lao Ka Ian (劉嘉欣), the 29-year-old author, was moved to write “生於廝, 長於廝, 死於廝” (“Here, where I was born, grew up and die”).
Lei Ion Long (李潤龍), the 22-year-old author of “遺書” (“Death Note”) was the winner of second prize in the contest. “玲玲” (“Ling Ling”) by U Ngai (余巍) and “吉屋” (“Empty House”) by Cheong Ho I (張可兒) were given the Honourable Mention by the jury.

As for the Portuguese competition, Fogo Lento” (“Slow fire”), by journalist Hélder Beja, was the winner.
The first runner-up “O Espírito do Jogo” (“The Spirit of Gaming”), was written by magistrate Jerónimo Gonçalves Santos. The jury also selected “Voltar” (“To Return”) by Elsa Botão Alves as second runner-up.
The awards were presented by Wu Zhiliang, president of the Macau Foundation, which sponsored the first phase of the Short Story Competition, and by members of the jury.
The top submission in each of the three categories (English, Chinese or Portuguese) was awarded MOP 5,000.00. Second prize received MOP 3,000.00 and third-placed submissions, MOP 2,000.00.
All winning stories will be published in their original form and also translated into the other two languages, in three separate books, until the end of the year.

  首先要感謝上天給我幸運讓我得到這個人生第一個第一名;其次要多謝這份報紙舉辦這個比賽;還有非常感謝當日來祝賀我的親朋好友,有我爸、我、我妹敏、我的璁、我的女兒Sia、我的好友阿俊及Connie!多謝您們!最後,我要多謝自己的堅持與努力,多年來都沒有放棄創作(包括寫作及音樂)!

  雖然,整個頒獎禮給人的感覺都很簡陋,令我有點失望。可是,正如一位在此比賽中認識的朋友所言,其實今次的意義比一切重大。原來我跟他都一樣,是第一次得獎。第一次,當然,對所有人來說,第一次,意義都是重大的,而且,這是我人生中第一個第一名!所以,那些外置物質雕琢裝飾,實在不值介懷呢!
