A military tatoo can be traced back to the 17th century when the British Army units were stationed in the Low Countries inclusive of Belgium and the Netherlands.Drummers from the forts were sent out into the towns at 9:30 p.m. each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was used to tell the inn keepers to ”turn off the taps”,stop serving beer and send the soldiers home for the night. The drummers continued to play until the curfew at 10:00 p.m..
Over the years , the process now has become more of a show. One of the best known Tattos is Edinburgh Military Tattoo.During the annual Edinburgh Internation Festival starting from August, thousands of people, as a usual ritual, come to Edinburgh to appreciate the show. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was first staged in 1950 snd it combined the traditional sounds of the pipes and drums with the modern aspects of the armsd forces. In 2007, the Taipei First Girls High School marching band was also invited to join tha show, involving more than 1,000performers from around the world.
