Master of Science in Finance

I.       Program description

The MS in Finance program is a rigorous, 10-month graduate program that prepares students for exciting careers in financial services, asset management, and corporate finance. We strongly encourage students with excellent quantitative skills, such as those with graduate or undergraduate degrees in mathematics, physics, engineering, or other technically oriented fields, to apply to this program. For those students who do not have any prior experience or training in finance, we offer concentrated "foundation" courses in both finance and accounting in the month of August to prepare them for the advanced finance course work in the program.

Completion of the degree requires a minimum of 32.5 graduate-level credit hours. For a student needing all of the foundation courses, the degree necessitates 38.5 credit hours. Observe that there are no elective choices since the programmatic design ensures that every MS in Finance student covers all of the courses considered by the finance faculty to be of primary interest to recruiters.

III. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

J  Students must have completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution at the time of enrollment in the MS in Finance program, comparable to the four-year undergraduate bachelor's degree from Washington University . Washington University undergraduate students wishing to enroll in the Master of Science in Finance program on a 3/2 basis must have completed at least 90 total hours of course credit prior to beginning the Master of Science in Finance curriculum.

J  Students must supply scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test. Test scores should not be more than five years old.

Q: What test scores are accepted for consideration for the MS Finance program? What scores are typical of those who are accepted?
A: Scores from either the GMAT or GRE are accepted. Though there is no preference for either exam, significantly more applicants to the program choose to submit GMAT scores over those from the GRE. There is no minimum test score to be considered for the program. However, the average GMAT for this year's entering class was around 710. Those who have done their undergraduate work in an English language environment are not required to submit TOEFL scores. While there is no minimum TOEFL score requirement, strong English language skills are expected. A range of TOEFL scores for this year's class is not currently available.

*** Current MS in Finance students have undergraduate and, in many cases, graduate degrees in varied fields of study, including mathematics, economics, finance, engineering, and science.

J  Q: I do not have a business background. Am I still eligible for the program?
A: It is not necessary to have a business background since we offer Foundations course work prior to the beginning of the academic year. This course work is in various business areas such as accounting, finance, and quantitative methods.
