RESIDENTS FEAR CUSTODY SUITE PROPOSAL
A “custody suite” for at least 70 prisoners is planned by the police for one of the most populated residential areas of Bournemouth and Poole.
The residents are angry and are planning to demonstrate against the proposal. Mary Hillman, chairman of the Residents’ Association, said that over five hundred residents had written to Poole Council and Dorset Police Authority to express their anger at the plan.
Dorset Police Authority is asking Dorset Council for planning permission to build the custody suite in the Yarmouth road. The police say that the two existing custody suites do not meet either current or projected operational needs.
“Why didn’t they discuss this with the community in advance? They should organize a public meeting and explain to the residents. But they don’t.”, said Ms Hillman.
She explained that the reasons for the objection to this plan are worry about the safety of children and other problems brought into the community. She is also worried about that the possible decrease in house value.
“An 84 year-old lady was crying and told me she was terrified because of this proposal”, said Ms Hillman. She is also concerned that parents are moving their children out of this area and this is already happening. She said that the custody suite is unsuitable because the school is so close to it and offenders might be different types of criminal. “Safety of children is our biggest fear”, she said.
But the Police say that, for security reasons, no operations will be visible to the public. Police vehicles with detainees will be driven in and out of an enclosed vehicle dock area to ensure safe and secure delivery.
Ms Hillman said that she believes more people will stand up to be counted and someone has to listen. “People before Profit”, she said.
The demonstration will be held at the Poole Civic Centre on 22nd October.
