Bullet to Taipei

Taiwan's high-speed railway is set to open in October 2005, and many people
are looking forward to riding Taiwan's fastest train. The bullet train, or "Shinkansen" as it is called in Japan, will leave slower trains far behind, reaching speeds of up to 350 km/hour. These special trains did not come cheap, however─the Taiwanese government has had to come up with over NT$500 billion in order to pay for the trains, the track and other additional costs. Many travelers feel that traveling from Kaohsiung to Taipei in style and at great speeds will be well worth the price.

Besides, Taiwan will be the first, and so far the only country to receive bullet trains from the Japanese, who have been building high-speed trains for almost forty years. The trains are designed to carry up to 300,000 passengers daily. They have two engines at both ends and 10 cars with seating for up to 1,000 people. Test runs will start on part of the line in September of this year.
