: What are your predictions for reading habits in the 21st century?
*********************************************************************
What do you think will happen to our reading habit in the future? I will use the knowledge I have today to make predictions for reading in the 21st century.
First of all, my prediction is that we will rely on the computer for our reading. A good example of this is newspapers; more and more people read the news through the internet instead of buying them. Including the fact that the selling of newspapers has dropping down since computer has involved in our daily life. Already, there are several sites in the internet with stories, meaning that you don’t have to go out to the bookstore. You can also experience other person’s writing or read someone’s blog through the computer without leaving the comfort zone of your home.
My second prediction is that the groups of reading ability will split further apart. For example, a person may be able to read very well or hardly at all. I can foresee there will be hardly any people of average reading ability. This means that there will be many separations in civilization. Meaning that there will many illiterate, possibly causing a drop in intelligence overall around the world.
The other thing that can prove my third prediction will be for those people who can not read properly. One of the biggest examples is cell phones. Cell phones have text messaging function which allows you to contact other person as quickly as possible. Therefore, “text language” was invented. By using TEXT language, people start to forget how to spell properly, learn their language correctly and their creativity and vocabulary ability will decrease eventually.
At this rate, text language will infest itself into our vocabulary. Already it has made a big foothold and it has appeared to make no move to back down. The latest dictionaries have included some of the text language. Many people use and encourage this but in the end, will it be a help or a hindrance?
Finally, I predict that there will be an increase in electronic books. Although I believe it may not surpass the normal books we read now, there will be a dramatic increase if we compare now with the book selling records 5 years ago. One way to prove my prediction will be websites such as Amazon.com, which provides the electronic books for people to download and read. An extra small prediction, more people will have glasses because of the computer screen instead of reading too much.
