It was a chilly day, but Ming only had on his summer clothes. He started walking faster to rid himself of the cold. Ming wished he had never left Taiwan. Ever since he had arrived in New York City in search of the American Dream, he had more and more problems. Ming checked his pockets again, and they were still empty. He tried not to think about his family and the fact that they were all waiting for him to return home. However, it was Chinese New Year, and Ming’s thoughts kept drifting back to them so far away. “I bet they are having a big feast,” thought Ming. He was really hungry.
All of a sudden, a woman hurried out of a department store and ran right into Ming. Before she could say, “Excuse me,” the woman rushed away while stuffing money into her purse and talking on her cell phone. Ming then noticed something on the ground. It was a $ 100 bill. The woman probably dropped it before she got into the taxi. Ming yelled for the woman to come back, but it was too late. At least now he could treat himself to a nice dinner.
Ming looked into restaurant windows while skipping down the road. Did he want a juicy steak? How about a roast duck? Since he had money, he could eat anything he wanted. Ming stopped in front of a Chinese restaurant. “Hot pot certainly reminds me of the good times back home,” he thought. Just as he was about to go inside, Ming noticed an old man sitting on the corner of an alley. His clothes were worn out, and the look on his face differed from all of the smiling people on the street. Ming wondered if he would end up like the old man someday.
Ming sat down beside him and gave him a pat on the shoulder. “Old man,” said Ming, “Join me for a good meal and celebrate the New Year.” The old man’s face lit up with gratitude because of Ming’s generosity. “You are so kind. But why do you want to eat with me?” asked the old man. Ming thought about it and said, “Do I feel poor because I have no money or because I’m alone? Share your time with me, and I’ll share my money with you.”
