An Incentive That Force Me To Go Further
This Monday was my first day to teach the police officers coming from different branches in Taoyuan City and County. Actually Maggie and I were so nervous and anxious about challenging this arduous and demanding task due to the fact that adult learners tend to be pickier to find fault with your teaching methodologies and materials. However, when getting on the stage, I did not feel as nervous as it used to be. Thanks Buddha! Now we are engaged in teaching GEPT for the beginning level that composes of listening, reading, and writing for the first part, and speaking for the second part. As a result of schoolwork and lack of experience, we decided to optimize the norm of Collaborative Teaching; namely: Maggie is responsible for listening part while I am engaged in reading and writing. This is my first time to teach in front of adults and give lectures for more than 40 people in one classroom. Therefore, I think I stride over a BIG step in my teaching experience for the possible future career. I feel so happy about that even I am still a rookie now. As a matter of fact, I confront with a predicament now: for the older ones, they even have NO motivation on learning English, partly stemming from the fact that they are forced to learn and they throw the knowledge all in the past. For instance, after brief introduction, we did a pretest to evaluate their level. There were totally 30 questions: 10 for listening, 15 for reading, and 5 for writing. When going around, we found that few of them even had no motivation to make a guess! Learning a variety of theories on motivation, we still find it difficult to apply the theories in real contexts. Thus, it constitutes our first problem. Second of all, only few of them possess better understanding of English (graduated from Police College) and ask us to teach faster and more, not just from the beginning. In the wake of thorough consideration and discussion, we found it impossible because being teachers is supposed to take the whole class into account. Today we learned there were some complaints they made on us. Though disappointed and a bit discouraged, I still take it as challenges they pose for us to attack. Besides, I am still confident in making them like English and pass the exam. Hopefully, I can get through this perfectly.
