2.8   Irregular Preterit (stem or spelling change)

Bueno, haces estudiando de muchos de preteritos.  Pero hy mas. You have learned the regular preterit and the irregular preterit. Now I have to tell you a bit about if other words can be a little trickier in preterit. The first of these what I call, ¨kind of¨ irregular verbs.  These verbs are not classified as irregular verbs, because they still bear some resemblance to the original.

Irregular preterit endings ER/IR, ending without the tildes, and endings without the i in 3rd person singular but change one or 2 letters in preterit tense, maybe aslo have stem change or spelling change.

No tilde, and therefore no stress on the last syllable when you pronounce the entire words.

There are 4 main categories for this ¨kind of¨irregular in the preterit.        

I, U, J, UV        

 "I"  verbs: hacer, querer, venir        
venir -->  ven  --> vin         
hacer -->  hac  --> hic        
querer  -->  quer  -->  quis        

then add -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, or -ieron        
        
hice, hicisite, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron        

Manuel hizo su tarea.        Manuel did his homework.

(Ellos) (Venir) por coche.        
Vinieron por coche.        They arrived by car.

(Yo) (Venir) a las 9 anoche.
Vine a las 9 anoche.

(Nosotros) (Venir) tarde a la fiesta.
Vinimos tarde a la fiesta.

hacer:   hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron
querer: quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisisteis, quisieron
venir:    vine, viniste, vino, vinimos, vinisteis, vinieron


 "U" verbs: caber, haber, poder, poner, saber  
caber, to fit or to be possible.
haber, to have, used in compound tense for expressing existence.
poder, to be able to
poner, to put        
saber, to know        

poner  pon -->  pus

conducir and traducir conjugate in the same way.        
        
Conduje el autobus en Irlanda.        I drove the bus in Ireland.
Condujiste el autobus en Marruecos.        You drove the bus in Morocco.
(Él) (Conducir) el autobus en Escocia.        
Condujo el autobus en Escocia.        He drove the bus in Scotland.

3ª person plural verb stems that end in J will use -eron instead of ieron.

 Spelling changer  all the spelling changers there are simply preserving the original pronunciation.        

G        ge, gi => gue, gui           
C (k)    ce, ci => que, qui        
Z         ze, zi =>  ce, ci   (vedio 裡誤植為 ze, zi)        
ending with G, C, or Z, then the preterit of Yo form needs to be changed to  gué,         

Jugué al fútbol esta tarde.        I played sccor this afternoon.
-GAR verbs will have a -GUÉ ending for 1st person singular in the preterit.        
pagar, to pay   (Yo)  pagué        

-CAR verbs will have a -QUÉ ending for 1st person singular in the preterit.        
Toqué el agua en la fuente.        I touched the water in the fountain.
Buscar, to look for   (Yo)  busqué        

        
-ZAR verbs will have a -QUÉ ending for 1st person singular in the preterit.        
Cruzr, to cross        
Crucé la calle para ir al museo.        
Memorizar, to memorize,  (Yo) memoricé        

 Stem-changer       

stem -changing AR & ER verbs in the simple present such like ¨tener¨ do NOT maintain that change in the preterit.        
e ---- ie        

(Simple present tense) stem-changing IR verbs (e- ie, e- i, o- u) also do NOT keep the change, except for the 3rd person singluar and plural, where it changes e - i, o- u.        

sentir:  sentí, sentiste, sintió, sentimos, sentisteis, sintieron
dormir: dormí, dormiste, durmió, dormimos, dormisteis, durmieron
