The government here has vowed to maintain the lowest fuel oil prices of any country in the world ... with the exception of those that produce oil.

The promise came from Economics minister Steven Chen in a meeting with lawmakers from the Taiwan Solidarity Union.

Chen got together with the lawmakers for a seminar on policy related to Taiwan’s small and medium enterprises.

Lawmakers with the TSU expressed concern that rising oil prices could hurt the competitiveness of local businesses.

They said that applies especially to heavy oil used by local industries.

Chen noted that fuel oil prices in Taiwan typically are one to two thousand NT cheaper than in neighboring Asian countries.

The minister said the government is fully aware of the potential impact of rising fuel prices on local business and industry ... and that his ministry will implement a policy that with the exception of oil producing countries ... Taiwan will maintain the lowest fuel oil prices.

The announcement comes just days after the government announced it was freezing gasoline price hikes through the middle of this month.
