Digne 「工作之歌」（Work Song）

序幕開始，1815年法國土隆（Toulon）的一處監獄，犯人在烈日下勞動。

獄吏Javert高聲喊著編號24601的囚犯尚萬強，他可以假釋出獄了。

「Valjean的逮捕與寬恕」（Valjean Arrested/Valjean Forgiven）

主角尚萬強(Valjean)只因為偷了一條麵包給他姊姊快要餓死的小孩，被判五年徒刑，但由於多次試圖越獄，刑期延長到十九年，如今方才重獲自由。出獄的尚萬強處處遭受歧視，而Digne地方的主教收留了他，並供他晚餐與住宿。尚萬強半夜偷走主教的銀製餐杯離開，卻被警察抓到，主教告訴警方尚萬強手中銀器乃是他相贈之物，並且還贈了一對銀燭臺送給尚萬強。警察離去後，主教告誡尚萬強要重新做人，並替他祝福。

受到主教感動的尚萬強決定痛改前非

Can such things be?
For I had come to hate this world
This world which had always hated me
Take an eye for an eye!
Turn your heart into stone!
This is all I have lived for!
This is all I have known!
One word from him and I'd be back
Beneath the lash, upon the rack
Instead he offers me my freedom,
I feel my shame inside me like a knife
He told me that I have a soul,
How does he know?
What spirit came to move my life?
Is there another way to go?

I am reaching, but I fall
And the night is closing in
And I stare into the void
To the whirlpool of my sin
I'll escape now from the world
From the world of Jean Valjean
Jean Valjean is nothing now
