Artist vs. Designer
I bet there are many people who cannot distinguish well the differences between artist and designer. Same here! I was pretty confused about that. Though,I got my own definition about this although it is probably not very correct.
[Artist]-have you ever found yourself in a museum looking at an artwork but found that you have no idea what this particular work?
Dont be panic! it doesnt mean you dont have the talent or something. Althoug I am an art major, I also find myself having this kind fo situation quite often. Artists usually use their work as medium to criticize/describe/analyse some certain social phenomenon. There are certain aspects you need to think of when you look at the artwork. 1. marxist aspect 2. sociological 3. psychological 4. feminist 5.semiotic.
So,I personally feel artists are just like philosophers;the only difference is that artists make stuff while philosophers talk or write.
[designer]-first,graphic designers.There are surely concepts in their works.But,the more important thing for them to do is to make the image look COOL.I guess graphic designers deal more with how to get viewrs’ attention.They are more pratical.
second,product designers.They need to deal with the pratical purpose 10 times more than any other kinds of designers because they are designing things for people’s everyday use.
(of course, there are other kinds of designers)
