Bonjour Boris!

A zoo in Canada has asked visitors to speak French to its Siberian tiger. Boris arrived at the zoo in May 2006. But the tiger didn’t respond to the keepers when they spoke English to him.

"When our zoo keepers tried to speak to him in English, he obviously didn’t understand what they were trying to tell him, so he remained indifferent," said Jan Archbold, a spokeswoman for the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

Then one day the only zoo keeper who speaks French said "Bonjour" to Boris and he came right over. Bonjour means hello in French.

Boris, who will be eight years old in August, was raised in captivity in Quebec, Canada, where people mainly speak French.

"We hope people will come to the zoo and speak French to him to keep him company," said Archbold.

Archbold said the zoo hopes to teach Boris English so that he can understand the commands of English-speaking zookeepers and veterinarians too. The Zoo hopes that Boris can become bilingual, just like you!
