Wyoming Capital--Cheyenne

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since my last traveling blog
since I had to read and write papers every day so I can finish my MA thesis
Yet now I am in the States again,
I can finally get a little bit lazier (for the moment)

Since 2011 summer, I've been in (or close to) Wyoming for 4 summers
every time I passed the Capital of Wyoming--Cheyenne,
I was either watching movie, getting foods, grocery shopping, or just shopping.
I never get to really enjoy and explore the city.
This time, since my boyfriend has to work in Cheyenne for a week,
we stay in Cheyenne for a whole week (in a fancy resorts! Thanks to his boss)
and I finally could know this city better.
And the most important thing is that it won't cost you a fortune to have fun here).
AND, it is totally fine if you don't have a vehicle or don't know how to drive.
after all, fuel and rental car are very expensive.

(at Wyoming State Capitol)

(oh yeah, I have Maleficent horns~)

(outside of Wyoming State Museum)

(having my drink in front of a pretty church)

First, it is very important to pick where you are going to stay
if you are going to enjoy the place with low budget, you have to consider of the public transportation. So, this should be the first thing you worry.
you should pick a place where is close to a bus stop,
then you can pick which hotel you like base on your budget.

http://www.cheyennecity.org/DocumentCenter/Home/View/4438

(check the link above, detail of bus stop and schedule)

Then, the major point of this article/
for those who has budget concern, you can find lots of free info in the hotel lobby.
and if you travel to a capital like Cheyenne,
you could find info for cities or even states close by
(which will be very helpful to plan a road trip)
and, as a traveler who worries about budget a lot,
you should definitely do some research in advance.
if you did nnot have time for that,
at least make sure whether there is anything special going on before you take off.

http://www.wyomingtourism.org/

of course, the website ends with "org"usually has the most detail info
like maps, coupons, events schedule...etc.

after u decide where is your ideal destination,
let's go take the bus!!!

(Cheyenne Transit Program @Little America Resort)

(除非你不介意多走幾步,你可以在靠近目的地的其他站下車走過去;

the "estimate"time of Cheyenne Transit Program is quite accurate,
the buses leave from transfer station every hour sharp,
and there is estimate arriving time on each stop
(usually it won't be there earlier than the time that shows on the sign,
but it seldom delays longer than 5 mins.)
and it only cost 1 dollar every time
(as long as u remember to get a transfer ticket from the driver,
you can transfer once for free).
Which means, to one destination only cost 1 dollar.
BUT, the only disadvantage about this is that it takes forever to get to ur destination.
(unless u don't mind getting off earlier and walk to the destination; or, you can enjoy the city view on the bus till u get to the place you want to go.

For example: the first day I took Cheyenne Transit Program,
I told the driver I am going to the State Capitol,
and she told me: be right there, have a sit.
and there were so many stops I thought she's gonna tell me that's my stop
because I can see that building right there.
It's probably only 2 blocks away.
But she didn't tell me to take off, and I didn't know how far will next stop be,
So I waited and waited, then it took me an hour to get to the exact stop.
(for there is no such stop named "State Capitol",
they name the stop by streets, which I didn't know for sure which stop I should get off.
If I get off 10 mins after I got on the bus, it might only takes me 10 mins to walk there.
But, I have to say it was kind of fun along the way with those passengers.

(Wyoming State Capitol)

my first stop was WY State Capitol,
which is located in the center of Cheyenne
with noticable golden dome.
It was started construction in 1886 (and extended later on).
and it is totally free for the public to visit. (Yes FREE).
you will see those halls where people made important decisions
and the beautiful stained color glasses
also some pretty carving on the wall/columns.

(in memory of Twin Towers)

some people might find it boring,
but I think it is quite fun to know how older generation lived by
visiting historical buildings.
Since we do not have time machine to really get to know how they lived,
I feel more or less connected by seeing these historical sites.

and the point is it is FREE to public.
When thinking of most museums or historical places charge u at least 8 dollars,
State Capitol is really tourist-friendly.

My second stop is just across the corner of State Capitol
the Wyoming State Museum

yeahhhh, u might be worry about "museum"
since it always cost a lot to go in America..

but there is no need to worry about this one
because this museum is as friendly as State Capitol
it is totally free as well :D
(just need to sign in at the entrance
and they will be very happy to know if you would like to donate some money
even just couple dollars but you are not "required" to put money in the box.
well, they need to have some money to keep the museum run after all

(mocking how tiny the brain is for T-Rex lol)

(I don't know how to put this on :c)

the specialty of a State museum is that it does not have a specific theme of collections.
It has the variety, including the collection of fossils,
stuffs from early generation, Indians, cowboys, and even about Japanese immigrants.
Though not every category has A LOT of collections,
it is still a cool place to visit and gain knowledge for a foreigner like me.
and I could spend couple hours in there taking pics too.

Since I know better about how the bus run, I decide to walk to my next destination.
that save me time and money.
(and I could see that building I am going from State Capitol,
besides, it's kinda of like sightseeing to me to wonder around the historical town area.)
REMINDER: do not walk alone if it is dark or you see homeless and/or drunk people !
(I was walking in the afternoon and many other people walk in that area)

extra:
I drank my bottle of water when I got out of the museum
and right there is a Starbucks in front of me.
So I walked in (for free wifi at first), and attracted by the menu.
So this stop became the on I spent the most in a day.
it cost me 4 some dollars to get my strawberry&creme frappuccino haha,

(and of course people in Starbucks spell my name wrong AGAIN,
it's AURORA not Aura !!!!!!)

many states in mid-west were on the route for people/pioneer to move to the West coast
(i.e. the Oregon Trail)
so there are lots of towns/cities established like hundreds of years ago.
Cheyenne is like one of those cities, so many old buildings can be seen here.
that is why to me, every corner could be a surprising spot.
like this church not too far from Starbucks,
I can sit here on the bench with flowers and breeze, and enjoying my drink
(trust me, Starbucks here will make you feel like you are in Taipei).

I did not use map at all for this walk,
just heading to the direction of that building (my next stop)
and make turns whenever I feel like it or when I see something I want to see.
wondering in town with no plan feel so good (like a young artist lol)

http://www.cheyennedepotmuseum.org/

Stop 3: Cheyenne Depot Plaza/Museum

(The Wranger is a huge shop!)

this building is a landmark and also a tourist info center.
it was a train station (still is but only for goods now)
As I said, museum is a fancy stop for people with less budget concern,
this museum will cost you 8 dollars...
BUT, as long as you do not walk into the museum entrance,
you can see everything of this building for free.
Usually, there are special events on the weekends,
like yesterday, there is Irish/ Scottish activity.
I saw many people wear those traditional costumes and play Scottish bagpipes or
showing the swords from fencing

even if you walk in the lobby without any event going on,
the building itself worth your time for taking pictures, too.
red bricks and the clock tower look so good together ~

since I picked downtown as my adventure starting area,
and it is a historical district,
I did not have any other specific stops that I wanted to go on that day,
so I just walked around the depot plaza and took pics with cute houses:)

(cutest B&B ever!!!)

and I was a coward, so I walked back to the bus stop before it gets dark.

Then I went to some places that I am pretty sure you will spend money on the following day
but you can take bus to those places as well.
i.e.: Mall and movie theater
if you can stop yourself buying things, mall could be a good place for you to spend all day
(free to walk in, with air-condition, have seats you can rest...)
But I strongly recommend you to go to those historical spots that I mentioned above.
(and it is free to go there, too!!)

if money is not your concern and you have your own vehicle,
don't forget to go online and pick some other spots for you to explore the city (deeply)

Let me show you how much I spent on my day:

Bus (round-trip): 2 USD
Starbucks: 4.xx USD
+) souvenir penny from the museum: 51 cents
----------------------------------------------------------
total: less than 8 USD

see, really low budget day !!

I really like reading your article.

You may have a different perspective if you live here. To me, Cheyenne is a BIG small town. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Wyoming. However, as a capital of Wyoming, Cheyenne lacks of career opportunities and entertainments, that being said, you don't have much to do here. The locals have close minded attitude, way too conservative. Once you set your foot in Ft. Collins 50 miles south to it, you will find it's a completely different world. The summer time in Cheyenne is always nice but won't last long. The winter time sucks you have 9 months of wind and cold. And don't forget about slow drivers, noticed locals drive 10 miles below speed limit, that reflects the laid back attitude towards work and life. Cheyenne is not a great place for young people, unless you get stuck here for some reason.
